Trump officials open border to 15,000 more foreign workers

Source: Washington Post

The Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced a one-time increase of 15,000 additional visas for low-wage seasonal workers for the remainder of this fiscal year, a seeming about-face from President Trump's "Hire American" rhetoric, following heavy lobbying from fisheries, hospitality and other industries that rely on temporary foreign workers.

The increase represents a 45 percent bump from the number of H-2B visas normally issued for the second half of the fiscal year, said senior Homeland Security officials in a call with reporters Monday.

The visas are for workers taking temporary jobs in the seafood, tourism, landscaping, construction and other seasonal industries — but not farm laborers.

I live in one of these places -- I have two teenage boys who would love to work at the local grocery selling worms to campers all summer long. These jobs are taken each year by Russian children (young adults really.) Ditto for the water park, the amusement park and the restaurants. The question doesn't seem to me to be, should they in turn ban my kids? The question that I have is, should my kids need a passport in order to obtain summer employment?

that requires employers to demonstrate that they exhausted the local labor supply prior to bringing in foreign workers.

Are you suggesting that employers should be able to bring in low wage foreign workers to undercut local opportunities and local salary norms, unabated, no questions asked?

they were broadcasting from a tourist town up north i believe. they cannot fill the positions without the foreign workers. the administration's refusal to let immigrants enter was creating a huge problem for these places.

it's just not that simple. some localities do not have a pool of workers for these jobs.

In some areas the need for cheap labor was bad enough that the bastard governor of Maine suggested using nonviolent prisoners in the hotels and restaurants there.

Anything to avoid paying a living wage right?

The guy in the first pic of the article is wearing a work apron with the number "45". We must spread the word to despicable voters that their dear leader tRump is letting these migrant workers through to take their jobs and they should protest by working these jobs because god knows this is honest but hard work that only real Americans should be doing.
