John Heard, the beloved star of several huge 80s and 90s movies, died Friday in Palo Alto, CA ... TMZ has learned.

Heard was found dead in a hotel by the maid service ... according to family sources. Police were called to the hotel for a report of a medical emergency, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. The coroner is investigating, and cause of death is unclear at this time.

We do know this ... according to his rep, John had "minor back surgery" Wednesday at Stanford Medical Center, and he was staying at the hotel while he recovered.

We lived next door to the Heard family in DC. I worked in a few shows with his sister over the years.

Sometimes general anesthesia causes "wet lung" which can lead to pneumonia.

He was great in Home Alone but he was in a lot of good movies: Awakenings, Pelican Brief, Milagro Beanfield Wars, In the Line of Fire...

with Liv Ullmann and Sam Waterston. It was one of those little known movies that was fascinating, mostly insightful dialogue.

I know Heard is not a terribly well known actor, but I've been following him for many years. This is truly sad.
