McCains primary rival urges him to step aside after diagnosis and suggests she could replace him.
Source: Washington Post
A day after news came out about Sen. John McCains (R-Ariz.) brain cancer diagnosis, his onetime political opponent urged the ailing senator to think about his political future sooner rather than later and expressed interest in the possibility of her taking over his Senate seat.
I hope Sen. McCain is going to look long and hard at this, that his family and his advisers are going to look at this, and theyre going to advise him to step away as quickly as possible, so that the business of the country and the business of Arizona being represented at the federal level can move forward, Kelli Ward, who lost to McCain in last years Republican primary and is now running to unseat U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), said Thursday during an interview with an Indiana radio station.
In a statement posted later on her website, Ward said McCains cancer is both devastating and debilitating and he owes it to the people of Arizona to step aside when hes no longer able to perform his duties.
....
I would never presume to say what someones prognosis is without having examined them. As a Christian, I know there can always be miracles. But the likelihood that John McCain is going to be able to come back to the Senate and be at full force for the people of our state and the people of the United States is low, said Ward.

(58,785 posts)but so do her political positions. I sure can't be bothered, though, to try to find out if she's just a true believer sincerely worried that the flow of wealth and power to the wealthy is being delayed.
She could be, though. Even if McCain is among the best of a very corrupted group, his absence is not good for their funders' extremist agenda and thus, as long as that continues, might be good for us. He'll probably be back soon, but I read speculation that, if he were to become disabled or die during this term, sentiment might actually help those pushing, like him, against the complete dismantling of our progressive institutions.
Just read. btw, that a bunch on the extreme right are cheering for MCain's tumor.

The next gen election in 2 years. It also says the appointee would fill the rest of McCain's term, which is 5 years. Internal inconsistency. I am sure, he or she would serve out the remainder of the 6 year term.
Nonetheless, it answered my question! The Governor appoints a Republican.
BumRushDaShow
(129,079 posts)which says -
A. When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or representative in Congress by reason of death or resignation, or from any other cause, the vacancy shall be filled at the next general election. At such election the person elected shall fill the unexpired term of the vacated office.
<...>
C. For a vacancy in the office of United States senator, the governor shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy. That appointee shall be of the same political party as the person vacating the office and shall serve until the person elected at the next general election is qualified and assumes office. If the person vacating the office changed political party affiliations after taking office, the person who is appointed to fill the vacancy shall be of the same political party that the vacating officeholder was when the vacating officeholder was elected or appointed to that office.

(26,748 posts)Right now, they have Ward/Flake running against each other for the 2018 nomination. The damage they'll do to each other provides our clearest shot at a pickup.
If McCain retires, then the governor can appoint Ward - clearing the decks for both candidates to focus on the general election (and giving Ward a year+ of incumbency)
