Obama credits supporters for thwarting health care repeal

Source: NBC News

Barack Obama on Friday credited supporters of the Affordable Care Act for saving his signature legislation from Republican-led efforts to dismantle it, while the former president acknowledged that the law can be improved.

Obamacare remains the law "because of everyone who mobilized, organized and made their voices heard," a spokesman for Obama said in a statement after the GOP's failed attempt to repeal parts of the legislation.

"President Obama has always said we should build on this law, just as members of both parties worked together to improve Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid over the years," Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis said. "President Obama still believes that it is possible for Congress to demonstrate the necessary bipartisanship and political courage to keep delivering on the promise of quality, affordable health insurance for every American."

GOP efforts to repeal parts of Obamacare fell short early Friday when three Republican senators, along with all Democrats, voted against it.

I'm from solid red, so regardless of my calls and many others, both of my idiot senators served their masters. I just don't know how the other side, or our side for that matter is going to come to any consensus about this. They want to kick 20 million people off their insurance and give the ruling class a tax cut. I'm frankly not sure what our side wants to do. Single payer? Not seeing a lot about that and being in the minority, never.

Keep in mind only a few voted against it, and not sure their supposed constituency had anything to do with it.

At least our party held together. If tax cuts for the ruling class come up though, that will not be the case.

I did follow my twitter last night and people that have been covering the Senate for decades said this was the most bizarre thing they have ever witnessed.

to vote for what they knew was a horrible bill so they could bring it to the House to negotiate on a new bill. Yes, I know that sounds crazy, but it's true! What they didn't seem to realize is that if the bill had passed the Senate, they would have given up every negotiating advantage. Ryan could have simply said "Fine, let's go with your bill" and they would have looked like idiots.

Remember, the point was to give Dump a "win" by passing a health care bill. Any bill that did away with the ACA would do.

This whole reality show drama with McCain was well thought out by the R's.

The power of 46 Ds PLUS 2 Independents (the Indies perhaps the ones actually being "neglected" - moreso Angus King since folks know where Bernie generally comes from), was underscored through the entire fiasco. They were the ultimate firewall.

However as much as Cornball Cornyn has gotten the media attention as the Majority Whip, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin is the one to give kudos too as well since he has generally stayed under the radar but helped Schumer keep the caucus firm.

It was a given that no Dem. would support repeal, and the Republicans never asked even one Dem. to contribute, that I know of.

Despite all of the bills being immensely unpopular among the citizens (17%), the Republicans were lacking just one vote to pass it. Despite protestors and emails and phone calls by supporters of the ACA.

None of these bills passed because of differences among the Republicans themselves, in large part because the bills weren't cruel enough (the tea party faction).

I am not just nostolgic for those days when we did not have to cringe even before reading a statement on anything by the man sitting in the Oval office. Seriously, when he can not even do the boiler plate type speech for the boy scouts without disgracing himself, it is hard to understand why anyone other than his base is not appalled.

Contrast President Obama's dignified comment crediting others for their work and Trump actually advocating for police to be abusive. Did anyone imagine that both the Boy Scouts and the Police Organization would have to appologize for indefensible comments from any POTUS?

It shows how warped the right half of the media is that President Obama and his family are not seen as the good, intelligent people they are. It would make sense if the right disagreed on goals and issues, but accepted that as people, the Obamas are good people.
