"Not that I'm advocating a colonization of Afghanistan..."

..........................................
Prince has been advocating for the use of private military contractors in Afghanistan who would train local units, under the supervision of a federal official with fairly broad powers. This would replace the presence of U.S. troops in the country.
When asked by MSNBCs Ali Velshi if he had ever seen such a plan work somewhere else, Prince responded, Sure. I mean, Ive mentioned in that article and I say, the East India Company. Again, not that Im advocating for a colonization of Afghanistan. Farthest from it.
Still, he went on to point to virtues of the East India Company, saying, We want to prevent terror sanctuary and leave. But when the East India Company operated for 200-plus years, they deployed with that model. One mentor to 20 local troops.
Princes idea isnt new he first laid out this plan in a Wall Street Journal article in May, ....................................
.............................
Private military contractors like Prince stand to profit immensely from the United States if their troops are used. But if the White House accepts his advice, there could be severe consequences. Private military contractors are often embroiled in scandals, and theyre not known for their accountability..................................

What a warmongering fool. Supply lines over two continents and two oceans easy peasy. He can draw on his great success in Iraq .
What, those other countries bordering Afghanistan are going to allow us to airlift troops (mercenaries) through their airspace, or over their roads, like they are in favor of helping us colonize another country?
This dangerous individual is trump-like in his imaginings that the world would stand by and watch such outrageousness unfold.
He needs to take his meds and ideas back to the 17th century where instant, worldwide communication didn't exist and such overt militarism could flourish without the colonizer nation becoming an instant pariah.

Main article: Presidency armies
Main article: Company rule in India
In its first century and half, the EIC used a few hundred soldiers as guards. The great expansion came after 1750, when it had 3000 regular troops. By 1763, it had 26,000; by 1778, it had 67,000. It recruited largely Indian troops, and trained them along European lines.[29] The military arm of the East India Company quickly developed to become a private corporate armed force, and was used as an instrument of geo-political power and expansion, rather than its original purpose as a guard force, and became the most powerful military force in the Indian sub-continent. As it increased in size the army was broken into the Presidency Armies of Bengal, Madras and Bombay each recruiting their own integral infantry, cavalry, artillery and horse artillery units. The navy also grew significantly, vastly expanding its fleet and although made up predominantly of heavily armed merchant vessels, called East Indiamen, it also included warships.

(9,808 posts)Only Alexander the Great and Ghengis Khan ever managed to bring parts of Afghanistan into a functional larger empire. You, sir, are nowhere near their caliber.
The only thing that unites the almost 200 culture groups in the legal country called Afghanistan is an invader. (Note that NATO/US has not managed to trigger that reaction despite 16 years.) They do have long memories, and the last colonial attempt is within living memory.

(5,101 posts)...not even Ghengis khan could achieve something more or less functional. Too busy, kills, rape, destroy and on and on...
But his great great son Shahrukh Mirza, son of Timur Lang great son of Ghengis, did very brightly. He secured the Silk Road and controlled the main trade roads between east and west. Samarqand and Herat became wealthy cities with great commercial exchanges.
Sorry, it is a bit simplistic but not enough fluent to make a more elaborate reply.
I had to do a work on Afghanistan History. I remember, it took me a great deal of time but really interesting. I still have a short version, less academic, written with a humor touch. It is in french, I may post it in the right place if someone is interested.

So here he is...again. (Because that's how that works - allow government/government contract criminals to go free and they come back one way or another)
If you don't remember all of his various crimes, to include those of Blackwater, look them up.

(1,686 posts)He is Trumps closet advisor. Ill bet his mercenaries will become Trumps personal security force. Hitler had a personal security force that became the Nazi SS, and that is not the secret service. BTW you can expect them to be "Backing-up" your local police any day now.

(841 posts)I am not sure if the British Empire should be our model for Afghanistan. Of course private security contractors would love the idea of being the modern East India Company. More money for them! I wish conservatives would get as mad about tax dollars going to private contractors as they do about money going to food stamps, education and Medicaid.

Afghanistan was considered as a crossroad of the civilizations, an epicenter of great empires and a geostratégic situation (Silk Road).
From Alexander the Great to USSR, through Mongols, Persians, British Empire, all have tried to seize it and all failed . Russia and later USSR, the last ones, finally gave up after 2 centuries struggling in Afghanistan. Needless to point their perfect knowledge of the territory. Although them surrendered.
So, M Prince, how will you achieve that? By the Grace of the Holy Spirit?

By 1803, at the height of its rule in India, the British East India company had a private army of about 260,000 - twice the size of the British army.[5] The company eventually came to rule large areas of India with its private armies, exercising military power and assuming administrative functions.[6] Company rule in India effectively began in 1757 and lasted until 1858, when, following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Government of India Act 1858 led to the British Crown's assuming direct control of India in the form of the new British Raj.
