Amateur submarine inventor arrested on suspicion of murder

An amateur submarine maker whose vessel sank off the Danish coast has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a Swedish journalist who joined him for the voyage was reported missing.
Peter Madsen, 46, denies killing the missing woman, claiming he dropped her off on an island about three and a half hours into their trip on Thursday night, according to Copenhagen police.
The only people on board were Madsen and the journalist, whose partner alerted authorities to her absence on Thursday evening. The owner of the submarine was arrested and is accused of having killed the Swedish woman without intent, they said in a statement. He denies the allegations and explains that he left the woman on the end of the Refshaleøen island.

The womans boyfriend alerted authorities that the submarine was missing early on Friday. Two helicopters and three ships searched the sea from Copenhagen to the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm.

The authorities have not yet been able to access the vessel, known as the Nautilus, which lies on the seabed in Koge Bay, south of Copenhagen. Salvage teams are at the site.

Police are hunting for witnesses and camera footage to determine whether the missing woman had disembarked after setting off.
Ms Wall had been writing about Mr Madsen and his submarine, which at one stage was the largest privately-made vessel of its kind.

The submarine later sank and Mr Madsen was rescued before being arrested and charged with manslaughter.
The stricken vessel, the Nautilus, has been raised but no body was found and the search for Ms Wall goes on.
Mr Madsen initially said that he dropped Ms Wall off before it sank but police say he has now changed his statement - although they have not said what to.

(101,316 posts)The headless torso was spotted by a passer-by in the Baltic Sea, where Swedish journalist Kim Wall is believed to have died onboard Peter Madsens privately built vessel.
The inventor initially claimed to have dropped the 30-year-old off alive in the Danish capital following a trip on the submarine on 10 August, but has since told police he dumped her body in the sea after she died in an accident.
Detectives said it was too early to say if the womans body, also missing legs and arms, was that of Ms Wall. The remains were sent for forensic analysis as divers continued to search the area where they were found by a passing cyclist.

(101,316 posts)Divers continue to search the waters near where the torso was discovered, but, despite some reported sightings, other remains have not been found.
"The current situation is that there is a torso in which arms, legs and head have been removed off as a result of deliberate cutting," said Jens Moller Jensen of the Copenhagen police.
"There is nothing about the length of the torso to indicate that it is not Kim Wall, but we do not yet know."

Lead investigator Jens Moller Jensen said that DNA had been taken from Kim Wall's hairbrush and toothbrush at her home in Sweden and it matched the remains found on a beach south of Copenhagen on Monday. There was metal attached to the headless torso to ensure it sank, he added.
Blood found on the submarine itself had also been identified as belonging to the Swedish journalist. He would not comment on the cause of death but said a post mortem examination was being carried out and police were still looking for the rest of her body.
