White nationalist rally in Va. linked to 3 deaths, officials say

Source: Boston Globe

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A car plowed into a crowd of people peacefully protesting a white nationalist rally Saturday in a Virginia college town, killing one person, hurting at least two dozen more and ratcheting up tension in an increasingly violent confrontation.

A helicopter crash that killed the pilot and a passenger later in the afternoon outside Charlottesville also was linked to the rally by State Police, though officials did not elaborate on how the crash was connected.

Linked by police to the rally, NOT "linked to the rally by State Police". Not a police rally. . . nt Bernardo de La Paz Aug 2017 #2

I am so sickened by all that went on today. Yes, we have free speech, but why were the White Nationalists allowed to march through the University Of Virginia? That just seemed like an invitation for trouble.

I was in one of those once, when Bush the Lesser came to a fundraiser in NYC. We were confined to a pen (surrounded by police barricades) a couple blocks away.

When I was nearer to the hotel where the dinner was, a cop told me I had to move along. I asked, "You mean where I'm standing now is not a Free Speech Zone?" He answered, "That's right." I was tempted to respond, "I remember when the whole country was a free speech zone" but I didn't have bail money on me.

The point of all this is that even hateful people like white supremacists and neo-Nazis are protected by the First Amendment (which, if they ever got power, they would quickly abrogate).

Anyway, even if the march had been held on the edge of town, the counter-demonstrators would still have shown up there, and this murderer would still have tried to kill some of them.
