Oregon approves sweeping bill expanding abortion access

By Sandhya Somashekhar August 15 at 11:02 PM

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) on Tuesday signed into law what advocates called the nation’s most progressive reproductive health policy, expanding access to abortion and birth control at a time when the Trump administration and other states are trying to restrict them.

Called the Reproductive Health Equity Act, the measure requires health insurers to provide birth control and abortion without charging a co-pay. It also dedicates state funds to provide reproductive health care to noncitizens excluded from Medicaid.

Antiabortion groups swiftly condemned the new law, saying it will force taxpayers to foot the bill for a procedure many consider to be a form of murder, and that it cements Oregon’s status as the most liberal state when it comes to abortion.

the War on Women is still raging in our country. Our sisters in Texas are under heavy assault from Republican men who rule that state. They are legislating women into 2nd class citizens with less rights and protects than the men who have subjugated them.

Texas just signed a law that prevents women from buying any insurance plan that includes coverage for abortions. The misogynist men of Texas who wrote this barbaric law wanted to hurt women, to humiliate them and penalize them solely because of their gender. These men are at war with women and they made sure that there is no exceptions for rape, incest or fetal abnormalities, forcing women into dire situations with no hope of redress.

it is still turning brighter shades of red, every year. Considering that they are even more conservative than they were 15 years ago (except for metro areas), I don't expect to see a turnaround for at least another generation. I hope I'm wrong.

are why the state one lives in is likely to become more and more important. I foresee people choosing where to live based more and more on the political climate and state policies. Oregon, California, the more progressive East Coast states, a few others--are likely to be the beneficiaries of brain drain from the rest of the country. Of course this has been a recognized and well-studied phenomenon but I think recent political trends at the Federal level are going to put the process on steroids.

and I've already told him we need to move to a liberal state this time around. We have lived in 4 states in the past 5 years, and living in MS has been the worst by far.
