Descendants of Confederate heroes want monuments pulled down

A handful of descendants of Confederate Civil War heroes Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Jefferson Davis are siding with those who believe monuments to their famous ancestors should be pulled down and moved to other settings, such as museums.

And a relative of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee says he would be fine with removing statues to his storied ancestor if it helps the country heal.

Criticism of Confederate monuments has been intensifying since Saturday, when a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia turned violent after white nationalists opposed to the city's plan to remove a statue of Lee clashed with counter-protesters.

President Donald Trump agrees with some in the South who say the monuments speak to America's history and heritage; but opponents of such symbols believe they glorify a shameful era of slavery.

It was one of the best I've seen in any forum for why this is important. Very well written and articulated.

You'll find many monuments and memorials to American soldiers all over Europe. But those are from the WWI and WWII era, nothing prior to that.

The European countries didn't take sides (for the most part) during our Civil War and that's what this is all about. The Confederate States only existing for roughly 10 years, and it was all over after 1865 when Lee surrendered.

5. Confederate Civil War heroes?

How did these traitors become "heroes?" They may be heroes to the White Supremacists, or the KKK, or the Aryan Brotherhood, but they were certainly NOT American heroes. They were murderous, racist, evil, traitors and terrorists.

The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:

Battle deaths: 110,070
Disease, etc.: 250,152
Total 360,222

http://civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm

These are the real heroes of the Civil War. These are the brave men who fought for freedom, liberty, and the American Constitution. They prevailed over the treasonous Confederacy whose leaders and followers attempted to overthrow the duly elected and representative government of the United States of America. They were traitors, and terrorists who attempted to use violence instead of the ballot box, and their copycats are still among us today.

The alt-right Republicans, and their brown-shirted White Supremacists/KKK militias are no more than the modern version of the Confederacy, and their "Second Amendment solution" battle cry is today's equivalent of the rebel yell.

May they all go straight to Hell by the most expeditious means possible.

Moved into museums is a good thing. The statues should not be part of the commons.

They can be used for education.

Hi, my family have been Southerners for 400 years, beginning at Jamestown before the pilgrims.

Can we compromise?

There are a whole lot of really obnoxious yankee monuments all over Dixie, some twenty stories tall, that mar our landscape and despoil our rural views. There's a huge marble monument to a yankee hole that they couldn't finish digging in their defeat at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. In addition yankee soldiers buried dead people in our central park in Marietta, Georgia and those could be removed and the roses replanted. The US highway system plowed through Confederal Cemeteries, like where I-24 and I-75 meet, and those could be restored, too. Of course the Lee-Custis mansion could have the bodies taken out of the yard and gardens, too. There is just as much yankee meanness around as Confederate, like the US government's "ownership" of everything Confederate and the obnoxious park rangers bent on remaking history. Seems we have room for compromise, after all, Bobby Lee will always remain alive and well in every Southerner's heart.

It is not very generous to label brave Southern soldiers who died for their country as "disgraceful". You must realize that Ukraine was enslaved for more than 400 years by the Russians, but she survives this day in the pantheon of nations. Dixie may be back one day.
