Kansas City Confederate memorial to be moved after vandalism

Source: Associated Press

Updated 2:40 pm, Sunday, August 20, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Parks officials in Kansas City, Missouri, say an 83-year-old Confederate memorial will be removed after it was vandalized.

The Missouri Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy asked Kansas City Parks and Recreation officials to remove the monument from its current location along of the city's main streets to a place of safety. That came after someone painted what appeared to be a red hammer and sickle on the "Loyal Women of the Old South" memorial late Friday or early Saturday.

Parks officials said Saturday the monument would be removed soon, and on Sunday crews covered it with plywood boards to prevent further graffiti until it can be relocated.

The memorial was erected in 1934 to recognize women who supported the Confederacy.

But I am for taxing the "Daughters of the Confederacy" and for designating them as a hate group - both of which should have happened decades ago already.

This is getting out of hand. It's devolving into anarchy, criminal acts, and failing to use the law. The same complaints made against those protesting the removals with violence.

The next thing you'd know, the whole country would be wearing those nasty little whaht gloves, and looking like dragons, drinking way too many mint juleps, eating lots and lots of peach cobbler, as mentioned above, and all feeling even more superior than is possible to imagine.

Looks like too much supremacy can cause your face to crack as your mouth becomes a jagged slash.

I couldn't post that without hearing it in Blanche Deveraux's voice.

I used to watch the Golden Girls from time to time as a kid with my retired neighbors (the sweetest people from Texas). Blanche and Sophia were a hoot.

I lived in Mississippi for some years. Almost everyone who's anyone belongs to a "heritage" society - a term which always refers to the Antebellum (slavery) era. Suffice it to say, many of the members are also part of the CCC - the re-branded KKK.

To be fair, many moderate whites do object - but they know to keep their objections to a minimum, lest their businesses suffer a boycott or they get fired for no apparent reason.

On a lighter note - a belated welcome to DU, jvill. Don't be a stranger, now!

for the better part of two years. My brother stil lives there, on Ward Parkway. I've driven by this piece of rock numerous times. Never stopped to see what it was. The fact that an organization named "United Daughters of the Confederacy" existed in 1934 and had the money to put this up tells you all you need to know. I doubt there are any black faces in those "women of the Old South" they venerate. This was a nice history lesson. Thanks
