WASHINGTON Former Missouri GOP senator John Danforth called President Trump "the most divisive president in our history" and warned Republicans not to let him tarnish the GOP's image.
"Trump is always eager to tell people that they dont belong here, whether its Mexicans, Muslims, transgender people or another group. His message is, You are not one of us', Danforth wrote in a Washington Post op-ed posted online Thursday evening. "And when he has the opportunity to unite Americans, to inspire us, to call out the most hateful among us, the KKK and the neo-Nazis, he refuses."
Danforth's op-ed is a harshly worded rebuke from a GOP elder statesman, coming at a time when Trump is already under fire for his response to the racially charged violence in Charlottesville, where white supremacists rallied earlier this month.
Danforth, an ordained Episcopal priest and three-term senator, called on Republicans to "disassociate ourselves from Trump" and tell voters that "he does not represent what it means to be a Republican." He suggested Republicans were at risk of losing their historical connection to Abraham Lincoln and the crusade to end slavery during the Civil War.

(129,440 posts)You all saw how he campaigned and bowled-over the other 16 in the GOP clown car, and yet far too many of you remained silent. It's 8 months later and now you show up?
The brand isn't just "tarnished", it is forever BRANDED as a right wing white supremacist-embracing, CT-hugging, racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, fascist-promoting treasonous party that puts Russian oligarchs above the average American people.

(1,474 posts)Trump is a non-politically correct image of GOP morals and values.
Divisive? GOP has used "Southern Strategy" since the 1960's. They have learned not to use n word, but dog whistles like welfare queens, young bucks, etc have dominated their quest to crush the safety net.
McCain was campaigning on building a "wall". GOP house refused to vote on immigration bills.
GOP loved the POPE when he was against abortion or birth control. But when he disagrees with them, he should not interfere in politics.
The party of "Family Values" clearly cares nothing about family values.
The party that loves the constitution blocked Obama's supreme court pick for almost a year. They have no problem with Jim Crow like voter suppression. Wars are great as long as the congress does not have to do its constitutional duty of declaring war.
All proclaimed Republican values have been lies to mask to mask their desire for power and love of rich people. Trump is exposing their dishonesty.
Trump is a rotting animal carcass hanging around the GOP's neck. Let them bask in it.

(58,724 posts)I remember him from the Clarence Thomas hearings.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reunited Friday with his mentor and the man who stood beside him through a difficult confirmation hearing, telling former Missouri Sen. John Danforth he owes him his career.
Thomas spoke at a Law Day event sponsored by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. During the speech he turned to Danforth, 80, and told him, "You are the reason why I'm here."
