Fresh Off A Pardon From Trump, Arpaio Floats A Primary Challenge To Flake

Just a few days after President Donald Trump issued a pardon for Joe Arpaio, the former Maricopa County sheriff hinted that he could mount a primary challenge to Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), whos up for re-election next year.
Arpaio, who was convicted of contempt of court for ignoring a court order to stop holding people solely on suspicion of being undocumented, told the Washington Examiner on Monday that he may run for office again.
I could run for mayor, I could run for legislator, I could run for Senate, he said. Im sure getting a lot of people around the state asking me to run against Flake, he added. All Im saying is the door is open and well see what happens. Ive got support. I know what support I have.
Its not clear how serious Arpaio is about challenging Flake. He lost his bid for a seventh term as sheriff of Maricopa County last year, and was later convicted of contempt of court. The sheriff was notorious for holding inmates in tent city, an open air jail he once referred to as a concentration camp.

(35,091 posts)Be sure to support Deedra Abboud, if she wins the primary she will be a Democrat who does not run away from being called a "liberal" and her political positions are beautiful.

(94,727 posts)...there are other serious candidates running for the nomination; at the very least, I'll wait until the Primary is held before providing support.

(35,091 posts)If you think voters in Arizona are too much under the sway of fear and paranoia to not vote for Deedra just because of her religion, then OK, support somebody still. One of these other candidates. Get the word out for candidates today.

(2,313 posts)It's time the Republican party and its members step up and nominate reasonable human beings. Yeah, Flake may believe in the magical invisible hand of the marketplace and other nonsense, but he at least seems like a reasonable human being. Having reasonable voices in the debate only elevates the debate. Having idiots like Trump and Arpaio as part of the conversation only coarsens our political debate and weakens our democracy. Having those same idiots as one side in a general election does no one any good.

(56,829 posts)I'm not a lawyer and only did a cursory google search, but I believe if he was pardoned and it was not a second conviction, he would be eligible. He would have standing if he had been convicted only once, but not two or more times.
That said, I'm no expert and could have missed things. So, I would not be upset if proven wrong.

It's like when someone says something in court and the judge tells the jury you are to forget what you just heard.
Of course they will...

(1,097 posts)I'm wondering if there can't be a state suit filed by individuals who were harmed -- thereby negating Trumps' ability to pardon any state sanctioned penalty or possible jail time? It would only seem fair that those harmed by this maggot can at least feel some sense of justice. Really! Something needs to be done to ensure he gets what he deserves -- JUSTICE DEMANDS IT.
