German nurse Niels Hoegel is thought to have killed at least 86, officials say

Berlin: A German nurse serving a life sentence for murdering two of his patients is believed to have killed at least 86 others entrusted to his care, officials said Monday, in what they described as an imagination-defying series of crimes.
The nurse, identified as Niels Hoegel, was sentenced to life in prison in February 2015, after a court in the northern town of Oldenburg found him guilty of administering overdoses of heart medication to some patients in an intensive care ward in Delmenhorst.
He was convicted of two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and causing bodily harm to patients and is serving his sentence.
During his trial, the former nurse confessed to intentionally inducing cardiac crises in 90 of his patients, 30 of whom he said had died. That prompted officials to launch an investigation into the deaths of some 130 of Hoegel's former patients. The results were presented Monday in Oldenburg.

(12,153 posts)I just had a flashback of my newborn granddaughter being injected with lidocaine by a male nurse aide 27 years ago in a military hospital here in the U.S. He wanted to take her to the brink of death so he could be lauded for saving her. She didn't die or suffer long term adverse effects because she weighed about 9 pounds.
Glad they got Hoegel.

(12,153 posts)The hospital is in Montgomery, Alabama, and the staff covered for him until some nurses finally blew the whistle. He'd done this to other babies too. I don't know if any of them died, but some of these "blue" newborns suffered long-term effects. There was a class action suit filed against the hospital and they paid up and the culprit simply moved on. Parents of the babies alerted hospitals all over the US about him, but I recall he did get work in a nursing home somewhere.
He was on the talk show called Lisa, and portrayed himself as a victim wrongly accused. When Lisa brought on some of the babies' parents to give their side of the story, the audience booed them and some even threw things at them.
My son said that the guy did get into some trouble later for throwing his own baby against a wall and breaking on of the baby's legs.
I have the asshole's name somewhere. I eventually was able to make myself not dwell on what happened to my granddaughter, and now I can't remember his name right off. For years I was obsessed with the thought of hunting him down and....
