North Korea: Tremor detected in sign of possible nuclear test

Source: BBC

A large earth tremor has been detected in North Korea, raising speculation that the country has carried out its sixth nuclear test.

US seismologists said the 5.6 magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of 10km (six miles).

South Korea immediately convened a national security council meeting.

The tremor comes hours after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was pictured with what state media said was a new type of hydrogen bomb.

SEOUL, South Korea — A seismic tremor was detected near an underground nuclear test site in North Korea on Sunday, prompting a scramble to determine if the North had conducted a sixth nuclear test in a direct challenge to President Trump.

If the North has tested another nuclear device, it would be an extraordinary show of defiance by North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, against Mr. Trump, who has warned he would unleash “fire and fury” against North Korea if Pyongyang continued to threaten the United States with nuclear missiles.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry and Meteorological Administration said an “artificial” tremor with a magnitude of 5.6 had emanated from the Punggye-ri underground nuclear test in northwestern North Korea.

so it never occurred to me that a tremor would be caused at the launch point and not (or also) at the point of impact. That is what they are implying, correct?

No missiles launched, just a very powerful bomb detonated in a mine shaft.

underground testing has be done for a long time, even in the U$A. Instrumentation is planted (which is destroyed but transmits data to a remote location) along the path.
The launch point would not cause a tremor, just like our rocket launches (Apollo, etc. didn't).

BY REUTERS SEPTEMBER 3, 2017 07:29

BEIJING - China's Earthquake Administration said on Sunday that it detected another quake in North Korea of magnitude 4.6, which it termed as a "collapse."

A statement on the administration's website said the second quake, measured at a depth of zero kilometers, came eight minutes after the first quake, which it said was a "suspected explosion."

The coordinates of the two quakes were almost identical, according to figures provided by the administration.

CNN International saying the last test was a 5.3 in magnitude with this being the largest being detected by some 30 seismic stations across the world.

In my opinion, its time for a regime change in NK. I think the US and South Korea need to work out a plan to reunify the 2 countries, go in "remove" the military regime, kill the nukes, and create Korea.... if you get bs from China or Russia, tell them to fuck themselves or they are next.

I actually never said anything I would do. I only said what I wouldn't do, and that is joining your one person regime change party since no government currently seems to want to join your crusade against at least 3 countries. That's a little ambitious but you seem confident you can whack all those countries and get em in line.
But I get where you're coming from. When people get scared they revert to their lowest instinct and just want to lash out and destroy anything in their view. It's a very basic reaction that happens when one doesn't have to think or care of consequences.

Its not 3 countries its one (my China and Russia comment was basically having the US telling them to mind their own business), and basically its one guy, because I believe in a regimes like NK, many would dance in the street if Kim was killed. If you think it hasnt been done before then you are kidding yourself. I prefer to do something then nothing. Seems to me there are some who are not taking Kim Jung serious. This guy is just about ready, not specifically with nukes, but ready to launch something, and I would prefer killing him, then having him kill out military on Guam, Japan, SK, anywhere.

Your suggestion that we invade N. Korea and start a land war would guarantee tens of millions dead, and possibly start WW3. It would be a long, brutal slog for years under even the best of circumstances. And since we'd be the ones firing the first shots, we'd become international pariahs, meaning no help from anyone else, and all the rebuilding costs on our shoulders.

If they make the first strike, however, we'd see an international force form in response to assault the Hermit Kingdom. We could use our NATO mutual-defense pact to amass a massive military counterstrike.

Ironically, we'd probably see fewer US lives lost this way, even assuming most of the population of Guam were casualties.

Until then, we deal with the situation we find ourselves in today. One way we deal with it is NOT suggesting we start a full-blown war with either Russia or China, because that way lies the extinction of most life on this planet.

Hahha ok good one..... Time machine...nice one, I didn't think of that one. Extinction of life on the planet.... no one seems to really address that, but you want to choice where to really be concerned?... not Nk, because I really do think there are "possible solutions" in place there. Be worried about Pakistan. The Taliban is way too close to those nukes... you want problems, look at that region. Why do you think we are in Afghanistan in the first place....
