Conservative Democrat Open to Single-Payer Health-Care System

Source: Bloomberg

The Senate’s most conservative Democrat said Tuesday Congress should consider adopting a single-payer health-care system, a sign of how fast politics are shifting on what was once seen as a fringe issue on the left.

"It should be explored," said West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, who faces re-election next year in a state President Donald Trump carried by 42 points. "I want to know what happens in all the countries that have it -- how well it works or the challenges they have."

Manchin, who was considered by Trump for a cabinet post, said he hopes the legislation will be considered by a congressional committee. He added that he’s not ready to sign onto the Medicare-for-all proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, runner-up for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.

Jesus, you stupid fuck. Everybody else knows! Why don't you?

Do you actually know how to wipe your ass?
No. You probably wipe it with your hand and then wipe your hand off with the toilet paper.

...is it your opinion that it works perfectly in every other Country? Or that only Bernie's version is acceptable, so no additional analysis is needed?

What specifically leads you to believe the poster may hold the sentiment, "your opinion that it works perfectly in every other Country..."?

Further, why the limitation of, and interpretive reduction to, only the two A or B possibilities you yourself listed (as directly implied by the "or" qualifier)?

As his response did not lead directly or indirectly to either conclusion...

be long held views against single payer. It also is prudent to look at the various systems worldwide. They are not identical and it would be foolish to ignore their decades of experience. Not to mention, we should not be like the Republicans - trying to push through something written without all the resources of the HELP committee, which Bernie is on, and the Finance committee -- not to mention the CBO etc.

PS Bernie Sanders had the Danish ambassador to the US, who he met in DC, as his guest about 3 or 4 years ago at a Burlington VT town hall to speak of the Danish experience with their system. Would you argue that he too was wasting time listening to - and having some of his constituents listen to someone from another country?

If the reaction of people like you is to attack people tentatively moving toward your position, are you being helpful? I assume that Bernie's reaction might be very different - such as setting up hearings on various single payer plans in operation. If the Republican led committee does not allow this, he could STILL have informational discussions hosted by left leaning think tanks, universities or maybe even Medical schools.

... "who faces re-election next year" ...

... this is Joe "My Daughter's A Ghoul" Manchin, so the year-after-next he changes back to his mangy, rabid blue dog persona ...

but wanted to explore single-payer, he would likely NOT bring up the issue now - he'd quietly do it after the election.

the exact very nuanced position he took. Remember even Trump tried to imply in 2016 that his goal was cheaper, better insurance for all -- and single payer is a way to get there. I do not think their are big insurance companies in WV.

Here, he is simply open to looking at alternatives and calling for a real look at the other countries. Remember in RW media, everyone in Canada and the UK HATE the system. Now, I have friends in both places, not one would trade for our mess of a system - not pre ACA, not ACA before Republican sabatoge, not ACA now.

I doubt any other "first world" countries would trade their healthcare system for ours. That said, every system has some problems, even the best ones. And, I suspect that in any sort of Congressional hearing on healthcare in Canada, the UK, Germany, etc, the Republicans in the hearing will attempt to blow up the flaws and downplay the advantages.
