Former CIA official resigns from Harvard after Chelsea Manning hiring

Source: The Hill

Former CIA deputy director Mike Morell resigned Thursday from his post as a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School after the university announced a day earlier that it hired Chelsea Manning as a visiting fellow.

Morell slammed the decision as a step towards legitimizing Manning's "criminal path" as a leaker of classified information, according to a letter first reported by CBS' Mosheh Oinounou.

"Unfortunately, I cannot be part of an organization — The Kennedy School — that honors a convicted felon and leaker of classified information, Ms. Chelsea Manning, by inviting her to be a Visiting Fellow at the Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics," Morell said in a letter address to Douglas Elmendorf, dean of the Harvard School of Government.

While the former CIA head acknowledged that his fellowship through the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is different from the school's Institute of Politics, he said he has "an obligation to my conscience" and country to "make the fundamental point that leaking classified information is disgraceful and damaging to our nation."

The CIA, known for overthrowing democratically elected governments so that the US could prop up tyrants and dictators, and rape those countries for their resources!

The same CIA that tortured and in some cases even murdered people they captured, or stood by as innocent men, women, and children were murdered by the tyrant du jour!!!

An obligation to his conscience, please...Morell is just as morally bankrupt as the clown in the White House!!!

We continued to have the same so-called enemies like Libya because Gaddafi nationalized oil production and then Goldman Sachs looted the treasury. not to mention an increase in hacking/spying capabilities meanwhile Russia pulled this shit right under our nose.

The CIA was proposing all kind of overthrows that they waited until Eisenhower took office. He originally created because he received briefings from all these different agencies and felt it would be better to streamline all this hence the name "Central Intelligence" and that was the original intention. Shortly afterward it took on a life of its own. I'm reading the book "Body of Secrets" and a lot of this corrupt behavior really took off under Eisenhower.

The CIA doesn't belong to any President...at times it's an autonomous organization that very seldom explains its motivation, much like Pakistan's ISI.

What qualifies Manning for any position in higher education? Seems hyper political to me, and I would have resigned as well, especially with a CIA pension as backup.

Chelsea Manning, Sean Spicer named fellows at Harvard

BOSTON (Reuters) - Chelsea Manning, the transgender U.S. Army soldier who served seven years in prison for leaking classified data, and former White House spokesman Sean Spicer have been named visiting fellows at Harvard University, the school said Wednesday.

“Broadening the range and depth of opportunity for students to hear from and engage with experts, leaders and policy-shapers is a cornerstone of the Institute of Politics,” said Bill Delhunt, acting director of the institute at the Harvard Kennedy School. “We welcome the breadth of thought-provoking viewpoints on race, gender, politics and the media.”

The two are part of a group of a dozen political leaders and journalists who will serve as visiting fellows at the school for the 2017-2018 academic year.

In US academia, a visiting scholar, visiting researcher, visiting fellow, visiting lecturer or visiting professor is a scholar from an institution who visits a host university and is projected to teach, lecture, or perform research on a topic the visitor is valued for.[1] In many cases the position is not salaried because the scholar typically is salaried by their home institution (or partially salaried, as in some cases of sabbatical leave from US universities), while some visiting positions are salaried.

Typically, a position as visiting scholar is for a couple of months or even a year,[2][3] though it can be extended. It is not unusual that host institutions provide accommodation for the visiting scholar. Typically, a visiting scholar is invited by the host institution. Being invited as a visiting scholar is often regarded as a significant accolade and recognition of the scholar's prominence in the field. Attracting prominent visiting scholars often allows the permanent faculty and graduate students to cooperate with prominent academics from other institutions, especially foreign ones.

It all depends on what areas they will be speaking to. They usually have high profile people to do this.

At the time Wikileaks was considered a journalist organization but still the Saudi cables are gold and as someone who went to Iraq in 2006-2007 I enjoy reading the Iraq war logs.

I disagree with him. Depending on what it is leaking it needs to be leaked plus this stuff is over classified as it is. Even on FOIA requests there are redactions all over the place even on something from nearly a 100 years ago and the people they are supposedly keeping it from know more what the spies are doing than the general public does.

The espionage act has always been bullshit. Most of it was ruled unconstitutional and J. Edgar Hoover used the act liberally to go after lefties.

if i become aware of a hire on the other side of the company, and i disapprove of that hire, i'm ethically bound to quit?

additionally, his sense of ethics is so precise that he's determined the exact length of time of incarceration that would have been appropriate in her case, evaluated that the time served was inadequate, and furthermore determined that a presidential commutation has no ethical bearing on the matter?

wow.

i'm going with "hey, i was going to quit anyway."

I used to teach substantial units on it in my classes back in the day.

One thesis is that the government & business would be a WHOLE lot more
corrupt than they are were it not for the existence of WB's - Dan Ellsberg comes to mind.

Another thesis is that one must always follow orders, even if they conflict
with the constitution, law or morality. Scooter Libby, Rishard Armitage come to mind.

I think having Manning around could well further the discussion.

And people always forget or conveniently do not remember that Manning
carefully reviewed the docs she released so as not to endanger anyone.
