Young immigrants shout down Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Several dozen young immigrants shouted down Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the U.S. House, on Monday during an event in San Francisco, following her recent conversations with President Donald Trump over the future of a program that grants many of them legal status.

"We are immigrant youth, undocumented and unafraid," they shouted as they overtook an event Pelosi was holding to encourage passing legislation that would give many young immigrants legal status.

After smiling and occasionally trying to speak through much of the protest, an aggravated Pelosi told the protesters to "just stop it, now," shortly before she was led out of the room.

She was appearing with Democratic U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee and Jared Huffman at College Track San Francisco, a program to expand college access. She was scheduled to appear Monday afternoon in Sacramento for a similar event.

I think many participants were sincere, but had they been manipulated by others with a hidden agenda? Or is it just easier to protest the Democratic representatives in the Bay Area instead of traveling to the districts where their real enemies reside?

My daughter was at that press conference---which was in support of DACA and the Dreamers, for god's sake--- and she was texting me in frustration the whole time. The protestors made it impossible even for Dreamers to speak.

A disorderly conduct arrest would block them from being in DACA now, and they could end up deported in a hurry under Trump and the Evil Elf.

Protesters shut down Pelosi news conference on DACA, chanting, 'All of us or none of us'

Chanting pro-immigrant slogans — “All of us or none of us,” “Democrats deport” and “We are not a bargaining chip” — more than 60 young people overwhelmed a Monday news conference that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had organized on her home turf in San Francisco to urge passage of the DREAM Act to protect immigrants who were brought to the country as children.

After nearly an hour of boisterous chanting from the group, which called itself “Undocumented Youth,” Pelosi and fellow House Democrats Barbara Lee of Oakland and Jared Huffman of San Rafael packed up and left the carefully orchestrated event.

Among the dozens of people leading the disruption was Luis Serrano. He called on Pelosi to fight for a “clean bill” that doesn’t make concessions to the Trump administration and includes a path to citizenship for the roughly 11 million immigrants who are in the U.S., without legal status, not just the 690,000 recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that the president recently rescinded.

“Where were you when we asked to defend our parents?” the group chanted in a call-and-response led by Serrano. “And now you tell us — you have the audacity to tell us — you have been fighting deportation. You are a liar! You are a liar! You are a liar!”

Counterproductive which makes me think this was the result of manipulation. I can understand their complaint of not wanting to be used as pawns by Trump or wanting to have a comprehensive immigration plan but right now we're talking prevention of deportation. Nancy Pelosi and the Dems are their defender at this point. There will be no citizenship opportunities if and when they're dumped out of the country. something that Trump supporters truly desire.

An example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Ugh!

IF those protesters weren't paid and REALLY feel this way "All of us or none of us," and were shouting this at Pelosi, then that REALLY isn't going to help their cause. I have several Hispanic friends--Who have family members who worked hard and sacrificed over a period of YEARS to become citizens of this country--and those folks were never as patient with the Dreamers as I've been, and my patience is going to be GONE if these types of counterproductive protests against their allies continue.

In a perfect world, I'd agree with these young peoples' sentiments. But we don't live in that world.

The fear of deportation back to a country you have no memory of or attachment to must be awful. Which is why blocking the deportation of 800,000 is so important. But I agree with you--this opposition and interruption of Pelosi's press conference is really an example of stepping on your own message and/or desire to stay in country. It's only by being in-counry that the demands they were shouting can be addressed and worked on. They stand little chance of that once deported.

I don't get it. The priorities have been skewed either by manipulation or bad decision-making or something. Whoever decided this was a good idea was really, really wrong.

MSNBC was showing the protest and they also had a spokesman or someone affiliated with the protestors on in an insert. He was pretty aggressive in answering questions from Casie Hunt (?). I thought, why are you protesting people who are trying to help you?

that the protestors were trying to draw attention to immingrants not covered by DACA. But, we have to start somewhere and the DREAMERs are a good place to do that. Then, hopefully, move on comprehensive reform.
