Michael Cohen, longtime lawyer and confidant to President Donald Trump, asserted Tuesday during closed-door Senate testimony that he had no involvement in any Russian meddling in last years presidential election.
I'm certain that the evidence at the conclusion of this investigation will reinforce the fact that there was no collusion between Russia, President Trump, or me, Cohen said in his prepared statement, which was released by his lawyers as he appeared before the Senate panel probing Russia and the 2016 election.
Cohen has come under increased scrutiny after it became public that he communicated with Russian officials about a proposal to build a Trump building in Moscow at the same time that Trump was campaigning in the GOP primaries.
In his statement, Cohen called this a real estate deal and nothing more.

Trump lawyer Cohen denies Russia collusion in opening statement
BY KATIE BO WILLIAMS - 09/19/17 10:20 AM EDT
President Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, emphatically denied any involvement with Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 election in a statement given to Senate investigators on Tuesday.
"I certain that the evidence a the conclusion of this investigation will reinforce the fact that there was no collusion between Russia, President Trump or me," he told Senate Intelligence Committee staff in a closed door interview that began shortly after 9 a.m.
Cohen is a fiercely loyal aide known from his days as an executive at the Trump Organization as the presidents pit bull.
He is seen as a key figure in the myriad investigations into election meddling, thanks both to his work on a proposed Trump Tower deal in Moscow and his appearance in an unconfirmed dossier full of incendiary allegations about Trump and Russia.
Cohen denied that he has ever visited Prague to meet with Russian officials, a key allegation contained in the dossier, and insisted that the potential Trump Tower deal was "solely a real estate deal and nothing more."

WASHINGTON A business associate of President Trump promised in 2015 to engineer a real estate deal with the aid of the president of Russia, Vladimir V. Putin, that he said would help Mr. Trump win the presidency.
The associate, Felix Sater, wrote a series of emails to Mr. Trumps lawyer, Michael Cohen, in which he boasted about his ties to Mr. Putin. He predicted that building a Trump Tower in Moscow would highlight Mr. Trumps savvy negotiating skills and be a political boon to his candidacy.
Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it, Mr. Sater wrote in an email. I will get all of Putins team to buy in on this, I will manage this process.

(32,745 posts)This story says the hearing was cancelled because Attorney Michael Cohen issued a statement to the press in defiance of the Senate hearing requirements. Now they've cancelled his "closed door hearing" and Cohen will be subpoenaed for an open court questioning.
