15 dead and 20 missing on Dominica after Hurricane Maria

Source: Sky News

At least 15 people have died and 20 are missing on Dominica following Hurricane Maria, the island's Prime Minister has said.

It was a miracle the death toll was not in the hundreds, Roosevelt Skerrit added.

The PM shed some tears as he spoke to a reporter on the nearby island of Antigua.

Dominica is "going to need all the help the world has to offer", he said.

It's getting far too dangerous to live there.

Of course, I could be wrong, since they really have no where else to go.

Dominica is a beautiful country. It's difficult to imagine how people there are going to be able to put their lives back together after such a catastrophe.

are going to suffer the most, at least for now.

It seems as though we won't change our carbon spewing ways until a third of the continental US is under water.

Hurricane Maria destroyed buildings and knocked out power across Puerto Rico before flooding parts of the Dominican Republic and then regaining some of its strength as it approached the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas late on Thursday.

The second major hurricane to rage through the Caribbean this month, Maria has killed at least 32 people and devastated several small islands, including St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominica.

At least 15 people were killed in Puerto Rico, the island’s El Nuevo Día? newspaper reported.
...
Maria was expected to bring as much as 40 inches (102 cms) of rain to Puerto Rico and 8 to 16 inches (20 to 40 cm) to the Turks and Caicos, which could cause flash floods and mudslides, the NHC said.

It looks like it's turning north, and the eye will pass to the east of the Turks and Caicos. While they'll get close to hurricane force winds, and huge rainfall, it's looking like the Bahamas won't be so badly affected.
