Trump: Puerto Rico is in 'deep trouble' after hurricanes
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Monday said Puerto Rico is in "deep trouble" as it faces large-scale damage and destruction brought about by Hurricane Maria, while pointing to its outdated infrastructure and large debt that complicate recovery efforts.
Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble..

...owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with. Food, water and medical are top priorities - and doing well. #FEMA

Delusional and callous at the same time.
As everyone knows, Puerto Rico is NOT "doing well" in terms of food, water, and medical needs.
And as everyone also now knows, Trump doesn't give a f*ck about it, and in fact is apparently planning to blame Puerto Rico for the catastrophe caused by a natural disaster.
After all, they can't vote for him in the next presidential election.
And they voted overwhelmingly for Marco Rubio over him in the primary, which they were allowed to vote in.

This situation is heartbreaking. What a pompous elitist ass he is to even mention their debt or aging infrastructure. This is a humanitarian crisis of huge proportion, risking hundreds of thousands of American lives.
A strong LEADER of the US would have had his subordinate agencies preplan rapid responses to this disaster, particularly considering this hurricane was predicted with very high probability to hit the island and the US Virgin Islands well before the event.
I have no clue as to the status of our Navy or Coast Guard fleet at this moment, but can't believe we could not have started a considerable fleet of either US Navy or larger Coast Guard ships toward the Island immediately after the storm passed. I realize it takes considerable time to prepare ships for deployment where massive aid is required, but we could at least get rapid response teams and a large security contingent on the way FAST. Rant done, nuf sed.

Trump only cares about his base. If you aren't 100% for him, you must be a terrible asshole, unpatriotic jerk, and you don't love your fuhrer...err President (so long as your president is Donald Trump).

(10,830 posts)strikes again. Puerto Rico is in trouble? Thanks for the Newsflash, Trumpy. Try being without water, power and communication while living on an island and see how you make out?
The man is totally tone deaf and lacks basic empathy. Why bring up Wall Street and 'billions of $$$ owed at a time like this? Is this the beginning of an excuse for not bailing out AMERICAN CITIZENs who find themselves in dire, even deadly straits? All that stagnant water laying about in hot, humid weather is a perfect recipe for disease. With no air-conditioning, limited nutritional and hydrating sources, we're looking at Katrina x 10 or higher.
Beyond these tweets, has the Trumpster even spoken about PI or the government's recovery plan for the population? If not, why not?
That's a question people need to keep asking. Over and over and over again.

It seems for an isolated territory such as Puerto Rico, the US needs a special rapid-response contingent to get satellite phones, a basic emergency medical contingent, water and basic nutrition, and security teams there quickly - perhaps via amphibious boats or planes. Dependence on 100% viable ports prior to life-saving efforts is not good.
I realize we're trying to arm-chair quarterback this thing, but it's very frustrating seeing these folks suffer - most of which cannot even communicate their peril.

(7,107 posts)Key info...
Federal officials say the reopening of ports is key to disaster recovery because ships can carry far more cargo than aircraft. Brown said air relief often has a more dramatic appearance, but ships are necessary for a humanitarian crisis of this scale.
An island like Puerto Rico or St. Thomas is fed and supplied by the sea. Ultimately the mass of response is going to come by sea, and getting the ports open is the single best thing the Coast Guard can do to get Puerto Rico back on its feet, said Brown, who as 7th District commander oversees operations in the islands.
