Poll: Nearly half in US unaware that Puerto Ricans are citizens

Source: The Hill

BY RAFAEL BERNAL - 09/26/17 12:01 PM EDT

Nearly half of all Americans aren't aware that Puerto Ricans are citizens, according to a new Morning Consult poll.

The U.S. territory's natural-born residents have been American citizens since 1917. Puerto Rico has been under control of the United States since 1898. Puerto Rico's status has received fresh attention over the last week as Hurricane Maria ravaged the island, leaving nearly all its 3.5 million residents without power and in many cases with no way to communicate to the outside world.

While 54 percent of Americans know that Puerto Ricans are citizens, 47 percent do not know that, according to the poll, which was first reported by The New York Times. Among Americans with a bachelor's degree, 72 percent are aware of citizenship for people on the island.

The poll found a connection between knowledge of Puerto Ricans' citizenship and a willingness to send emergency aid. According to the report, 8 in 10 Americans who know Puerto Ricans are citizens support sending aid, while among those who do not know, 4 in 10 support sending aid.

28% of those with a Bachelors degree still didn't know. What kind of courses did they take? Basket weaving?

Many technical/science degrees do not require alot of social/science or humanities course work. One's freshman year usually has a smattering of literature or composition courses. After that there are alot of "electives" and many folks use them to take softball courses for the easy A. Pysc 1 and 2 were a popular combination. Quite honestly though, this should have been covered in a highschool civics and/or history course.

Instead of 47% I would think its more like 75%.
Also, 54+47=101
"A new poll of 2,200 adults by Morning Consult found that only 54 percent of Americans know that people born in Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States, are U.S. citizens. (Because Puerto Rico is not a state, they do not vote in presidential elections, but they send one nonvoting representative to Congress.)

This finding varied significantly by age and education. Only 37 percent of people ages 18 to 29 know people born in Puerto Rico are citizens, compared with 64 percent of those 65 or older. Similarly, 47 percent of Americans without a college degree know Puerto Ricans are Americans, compared with 72 percent of those with a bachelor’s degree and 66 percent of those with a postgraduate education."

DeVos will only be sure the kids have an education in "dumb them down".

As did Shrub, Rayguns and Nixon.

Dumb, easily led.
