Transportation Dept awards $40 million to repair roads, bridges in Puerto Rico

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 09/28/17 11:52 AM EDT

The Transportation Department is awarding $40 million to Puerto Rico for emergency road and bridge repairs, as the island continues to deal with the fallout from Hurricane Maria.

The Federal Highway Administration said Thursday that it would immediately make the Emergency Relief funds available to the U.S. territory to help restore service on roads and bridges badly damaged by the storm.

The funds were requested earlier Thursday and approved immediately. The Trump administration faced scrutiny earlier this week for what critics said was a lackluster and delayed response to the devastation wrought by Maria.

“Puerto Rico was hit hard by Hurricane Maria, so I have directed the Department to release $40 million in emergency funding to begin restoring and repairing the roads and bridges across the island,” Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said.

I was in the Seabees and the slogan is "Can Do". We repaired lots of stuff by making our own parts when the proper parts weren't available. The mechanics could get lots of the damaged vehicles in good enough condition to carry supplies. Those containers wouldn't be sitting on the dock. I won't say how they would get the gas but believe me they would. They know how to get around the red tape. The obvious fact is the Seabees were created to land on Pacific Islands and move supplies and build viable shelter etc.

waiting to be delivered to communities, no room for more, no fuel, few drivers, for moving those there out right now.

Yes, where are they. Quick googling Seabees and Naval Construction didn't produce word about them, but they must be getting involved somehow.

Stressed out FEMA guy tired, tired, tired after 40 days of intense work, 3 major hurricanes, and frustrated with the interviewer's critical questions that note what is being done only as springboards for more criticism. He spoke of "slots," though, lots of stuff needing to arrive but can only get on the island as slots open up.

The reason is drumpfs hate for brown people and probably some guilt over himself filing bankruptcy and costing Puerto Rico $660,000 from what I've read. Since he's never responsible for anything, he thinks it's Puerto Rico's fault and hates them for this too? He won't send the military because he will only do the absolute min. possible, and nowhere near what's actually necessary.

This would not happen under any other president. Only Drumpf in the history of our country is so unfeeling and uncaring. Any deaths in that country are on him, his fault, his "Heck of a job Brownie" time.

Every single thing he's doing is way too late and way too little.

That covers approximate twenty miles of new road construction, or sixty miles to rehabilitate roads in need of repair from the storm. Puerto Rico currently consists of approximately 9000 miles of roadway (not including tertiary roads).

We agreed with each other that rebuilding is pointless. Our county really needs to relocate PR. With our climate change it is going to do this again and put them back in the same place they are now. I hate saying that but PR is in an area that is going to be one of the first to disappear. How are people going to pay for anything? Most peoples jobs are gone and will not be back soon if ever.
