Suspect identified, Texas Tech police officer killed as campus remains on lockdown following reported shooting
A suspect name has been released after a Texas Tech Police officer was killed during a reported shooting that left the university campus on lockdown on Monday night.
Officials say a Texas Tech student, identified as 19-year-old Hollis A. Daniels, is still on the loose.
Officers were reportedly performing a wellness check on Daniels while on campus, when he was brought into the department for questioning, the officer was shot in the head, according to Texas Tech spokesman Chris Cook.
A campus emergency notification was issued shortly before 8:30 p.m., following the reported shooting.

(51 posts)Apparently he was brought in for drugs and the cop did not search him. When he went to get the paper work the guy shot the cop and fled.
It's sad really, because it was avoidable had the officer searched him.

One year later, concealed carry has little impact on Texas university campus
One year since campus carry was adopted at public universities in Texas, authorities in the state claim the law has not impacted campuses in any significant way.
"We have had no incidents since the law passed or since the law went into effect of criminal acts by license-to-carry holders," Ed Reynolds, Chief of the University of North Texas Police Department, told the Denton Record-Chronicle.
"We have had cases that involved weapons on campus, but the individuals that were carrying were not license-to-carry holders," Reynolds told the paper.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the law --- which allows concealed handguns in college classrooms, buildings and dorms -- in 2015. But the law, which took effect in August 2016, allows each public university to create its own implementation process and policy.

(7,217 posts)Texas Senate Bill 11, a.k.a, the Campus Carry Law.
Texas Senate, Bill 11, Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, is,amended by adding Section 411.2031 to read as follows...
(b) A license holder may carry a concealed handgun on or,about the license holders person while the license holder is on the campus of an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education in this state.
(c) Except as provided by Subsection (d or (e) an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education in this state may not adopt any rule, regulation, or other provision prohibiting license holders, from carrying handguns on the campus of the institution.
And of course:
Section 2, 411-208:
(b) A cause of action in damages may not be brought against the state, an agency or subdivision of the state, an officer or employee of the state, (etc., etc.)... for any damage caused by the actions of an applicant or license holder under this subchapter.
NY Times June 2, 2015:
"Students and faculty members at public and private universities in Texas could be allowed to carry concealed handguns into classrooms, dormitories and other buildings under a bill passed over the weekend by the Republican-dominated Legislature. The measure is being hailed as a victory by gun rights advocates and criticized by many students and professors as irresponsible and unnecessary."
And by "irresponsible", they meant "really fucking stew-pud."

(7,217 posts)So is shooting a cop in the head but that didn't stop him.
I doubt very much (could be wrong) he knew he had to have a license and be age 21 (also doubt he would give a shit). Most likely all he heard was it was just fine to be packing heat on all Texas campuses; "Dude! It's legal!" The fine points, not so much.
The perception in academia will be that Texas is a free-fire zone with yokels in the classrooms packing heat. - Lynn W. Tatum, Baylor University. That perception, pounded into him year after year, after year by Texas' gun nuts, the Reich-wing media, and the NRA, is all this shooter had.
Texas' SB 11 encouraged this. It should now be the responsibility of the state, after this shooting, after 19-year-old Colton Tooley opened fire at the U of Texas, decades after the state that had the very first university shooting in the U.S. when Charles Whitman fired at people from the schools clock tower killing 16, to re-visit the law and their assumptions.
They won't.
