Russian propaganda promoting Texas secession moves to Instagram
Source: Think Progress
On Monday morning, ThinkProgress reported on the existence of an Instagram account that went live around the time Facebook began removing hundreds of Russia-linked accounts in August. This Raised in Texas Instagram account posted the same material as the now-defunct Heart of Texas Facebook page, which was itself run out of Russia.
By Monday afternoon, the Instagram account had disappeared.
It remains unclear whether the Raised in Texas Instagram account, which began posting on Aug. 21 and described itself as the Page Only for REAL Texans!, was linked to the Heart of Texas page. Facebook did not return requests for comment, and the Raised in Texas account failed to answer ThinkProgresss questions before it disappeared.
However, there are any number of indicators that should give Facebook and Instagram pause and which highlight the issues remaining for the tech giants surrounding fraudulent foreign accounts aimed at inflaming Americas socio-political divides.

And has Rachel Maddow reported last night, the only way the public is finding about this sh*t is because of journalists, the silicon valley corporations are only thinking about greed, and the wall street bottom line, they are just about like every other corporation in this country, give us your infrastructure but to hell with a republic, its about the money.
They know and they just don't care, these platforms have done nothing to tell the public what they know------------------because of the damage that was created, and they knew

(2,357 posts)But I would also like Texas to secede...
Edit: Perhaps my initial comment should have read "I agree with the Russians" rather than "support".

(2,357 posts)from Texas in our legislature. Since the only way to do that is for Texas to secede, well, there you go.
That said, I understand that it is unlikely to happen.

(37,748 posts)Geographical purity tests are so trendy. And no doubt, you'll rationalize your sentiment as possessing critical thought... that will be bemusing.

(2,357 posts)If someone on DU were to express support for the Republican government of Texas, they would be kicked off the board.
I am expressing my abhorrence and lack of support for said Republican government.

(28,261 posts)Contrary to your evident beliefs, there are plenty of Democrats in Texas; more and more of them all the time. We've never backed the idiotic notion of secession, and we're loyal to our country---even without much in the way of representation, at present. We don't need clueless Texas-bashers making things any more difficult for us.

(2,357 posts)I for one support your efforts at change in your state.
Perhaps your Republicans could secede without you then.

(28,261 posts)Democrats already control virtually all of the big urban areas---Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin. The fight goes on.

(28,261 posts)....you were advocating---as way too many DUers have over the years---the disenfranchisement of every man, woman and child in the entire state of Texas, regardless of political viewpoints. The sentiment for secession has never polled anywhere close to a majority in Texas---"Secede!" bumper-stickers show up every once in a while, invariably on beat-up trucks which also sport confederate flags. Besides which, a lot of my conservative friends would probably take me up on my silly West Texas relocation concept---because chances are, there's a shitload of oil and gas underneath that barren wasteland (google "Permian Basin" for additional enlightenment).

I was not advocating this at all. I assumed that if Texas was an independent nation that they would still retain the franchise wrt their own citizens and government. Kind of like how Canadians can vote, just not in US elections. Canadians are no less free for all that.

(2,357 posts)They want a country run by folks like them, I want the opposite. The fact that both of our goals can be accomplished through the same action (secession by them) just makes the whole thing more of an elegant solution.

(8,747 posts)Just like the RW idiots on Texas who want secession. And I have lived in Texas most of my life. I can't t say what I really think about you.

(2,357 posts)Since I do not live in Texas, I doubt I could be considered a traitor to them.
As for the USA, I want the USA to continue as a nation. Therefore I am not a traitor to the USA either.

(2,357 posts)I could give negative 16 sh**s whether or not the future Nation of Texas institutes an Iron Curtain. If they did, it would just expose them as frauds, considering their constant invocation of "freedom and liberty" (such as it is) and their love of such emblems as the Gadsden flag.

(1,204 posts)There are easy way of doing this that anyone can do. And if this is as organized and state sponsored as it appears, then it would be even easier for them to make it incredibly difficult to detect. Like if someone uses a known VPN service or they find traffic coming from an amazon aws or digital ocean server, then that might raise some red flags even if they are US originated. But these guys could have actual locations setup across the US/Canada/Wherever that have legitimate accounts at ISPs. It's also likely they could have backdoor access to millions of computers that they infected just so they could essentially use them as proxies. The latter might be detectable in some cases if that same IP is being used for multiple accounts on the same platform, but that would require investigation. It could just be someone trolling for laughs or multiple people living in the same location.
I'm sure they have or are developing some AI stuff to analyze the content of the posts for comparison with other posts seen around the internets and also compare it to other content coming from that location. There's a lot of "cool" and creepy stuff that can be done in that arena. But whatever solutions they come up with are going to be far more complex than banning a specific geographic locations.

(67,406 posts)those who prefer not to live under such tyranny. unfortunately secession has a bad reputation since the slave owners tried it and failed. the west coast of the US could do quite well as a liberal democracy and that is not just russian propaganda to say so.
