Mo. state representative suggests pulling tax dollars from Kansas City Chiefs & NFL

Source: Fox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Missouri Republican State Representative Nate Walker, from Kirksville, is calling for the formation of a task force to study pulling state tax dollars that support NFL activities, more specifically, the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The NFL is big business. Previous governors and legislators in Missouri have invested millions of taxpayer dollars into NFL facilities for economic development and entertainment purposes," said Missouri Representative Nate Walker.

"Recent protests are impacting viewership, hurting the fan base of the NFL, and putting at risk all of our public investments. NFL stadiums have been a major investment of taxpayer money and the league must remain popular to continue to have a positive impact on our local and state economy,” he continued.

Walker describes himself as a "lifelong fan of the KC Chiefs" but says he wants to debate whether or not taxpayer dollars should continue to support the NFL.

He doesn’t give a shit about the players’ brains. This is over the players giving him a sad by exercising their First Amendment rights. And if anyone has the right to protest the cops shooting unarmed black men, it’s people who play in the state where Ferguson is.

Taxpayers should not subsidize the NFL at all. That being said, he wants owners to quash rebellious players and threatening to take away government subsidies and funding is one way to compel owners to change.

it would be awesome to watch the long-term effects of the GOP destroying America's favorite sport.

I'm sure Bubba and Billy Bob would start watching soccer and tennis when NASCAR isn't on.

Reading Something in the N.F.L. Ratings? You’re Probably Wrong

Found this.
The N.F.L.’s regular season ratings fell by about 8 percent from 2015 to 2016, a drop that has been subject to all manner of explanation.

Ratings for the first week of this season dropped by 12 percent from last year, but those games were played the day Hurricane Irma landed in Florida, when millions of viewers were tuned to coverage of the storm instead of football. Ratings for Week 2 were down by 15 percent — but only by 4 percent if one factors in that the Thursday night game was only broadcast on the N.F.L. Network, while last year it was on both the N.F.L. Network and CBS, which has a wider reach.

This summer, a J.D. Power survey of sports fans reported that 26 percent of fans who said they watched fewer N.F.L. games did so because of protests during the national anthem, according to an ESPN report. But only 12 percent of sports fans said they watched fewer N.F.L. games — meaning only 3 percent of respondents over all said they watched fewer games because of protests — and 27 percent of fans surveyed said they actually watched more games than they had the previous year.

So the impact of the protests is minimal.

But states and municipalities need to stop throwing tax dollars at stadiums and professional sport teams. The only winners are the owners. It seems the free market is great, but not for professional sports team owners and real estate developers.

But I see no problem with pulling tax dollars subsidizing from established profitable companies, bet it the NFL or farmers. Do it already.
