Election hacking report: US 'has a lot to do in a short period of time'

A closely-watched report on election hacking on Tuesday warned that the U.S. is racing against time to fix security vulnerabilities in voting machines discovered at the DEF CON hacker conference.
Weve got a lot to do in a short period of time, said Douglas Lute, former ambassador to NATO, at an Atlantic Council event releasing the report.
The DEF CON conference, held in late July, purchased 30 election machines for hackers to investigate. They found security problems in the machines including decades-out-of-date hardware with known security flaws, a machine with hackable wi-fi and vulnerable software and hardware.
The report notes potential supply chain issues with voting machines, such as components manufactured in foreign countries including China. One electronic poll book obtained by DEF CON contained personal information on 654,517 voters from Shelby County, Tennessee, from about 2008.

(7,643 posts)The obstruction to this simple solution is the complicated part -- too much dark money and influence to give up computerized voting and tabulation.
The evidence that these machines do not meet the burden of proof that our votes are counted as cast is overwhelming; there is no legitimate excuse for elections officials to keep using them.

glamour or love scandal to capture their attention. And the crime scene is hidden from view. And whenever attempts are made to conduct hand recounts or forensics, there is an orchestrated effort by elections officials to obstruct such efforts.

(6,974 posts)I hear you.
I have friends whose relatives who didn't bother to register to vote and if they were registered, they didn't care enough to vote. As one friend said her sister told her that "The she's old and just like tRump, so who cares who wins?" Mind you, my friend told me just last week that her sister STILL doesn't care enough to be worried that her health care could be yanked away from her and her 2 kids. She just knows that she and her kids have their health care, their section 8, a few food stamps for NOW, and that's all that matters in HER universe By the way, my friend no longer will give her sister any money because she said she told her that it doesn't matter in the scheme of things, right, whereupon the sister got boiling mad at her to the point where she hasn't spoken to her going on 2 months, plus, she hasn't seen nor heard from this sister's kids either
I told her good for her, and that HER money belongs in HER pocket for HER use ONLY, and not to fix her sister's truck, because you know--who CARES, right

(6,974 posts)There isn't going to be enough time to fix this voting mess, and especially not under THIS putin-inspired White House. Hell, it's not being seriously addressed as it is. I'm NOT feeling too enthusiastic about our upcoming elections, especially as we CONTINUE to read about things like this where our voting apparatus is STILL so messed up, hackable and not being fixed or addressed on purpose. thuglicans are running everything from collecting to counting our votes, and I don't trust them to collect or count our votes as far as I can throw a Mack Truck. We STILL don't have a head of the Department of Homeland Security (On purpose). Also, there's going to be a decision on the Wisconsin gerrymandering case coming from the Supreme Court ahead of the 2018/2020 elections which probably won't favor Dems or democracy, because if that ruling is upheld which allows gerrymandering off the chain to continue, it will be extremely difficult for people of the Democratic persuasion to vote moving forward. 5-4 right-leaning majority thanks to crazy, racist, righty Gorsuch being installed onto the Supreme Court (McConnell's and the GOP's doing--a black man couldn't be allowed to fill a Supreme Court vacancy) And then, we have what will likely be MORE ruskie interference to deal with because tRumputin continues to say that there was no interference from ruSSia because he's beholden to putin, plus racist beauregard doesn't want minorities or Dems to vote, so of course he wouldn't CARE if the deck is stacked against Dems or if his fellow thuglicans aren't playing fair with the voting system across this country.
