Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Others Say Weinstein Harassed Them

Source: New York Times

“This way of treating women ends now,” Ms.Paltrow said as she and other actresses accused the producer of casting-couch abuses.

By JODI KANTOR and RACHEL ABRAMSOCT. 10, 2017

When Gwyneth Paltrow was 22 years old, she got a role that would take her from actress to star: The film producer Harvey Weinstein hired her for the lead in the Jane Austen adaptation “Emma.” Before shooting began, he summoned her to his suite at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for a work meeting that began uneventfully.

It ended with Mr. Weinstein placing his hands on her and suggesting they head to the bedroom for massages, she said.

“I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified,” she said in an interview, publicly disclosing that she was sexually harassed by the man who ignited her career and later helped her win an Academy Award.

She refused his advances, she said, and confided in Brad Pitt, her boyfriend at the time. Mr. Pitt confronted Mr. Weinstein, and soon after, the producer warned her not to tell anyone else about his come-on. “I thought he was going to fire me,” she said.

he had not been outed--presumably they did not have first-hand knowledge, they themselves were not harassed-and even if they were are these two women alone obligated to make their harassment public?

Donna Karan has actually blamed women in general for how they dress.

Powerful women seem to have been exempt from Weinstein's advances. Same with Roger Ailes.

It seems to me that the blame lies with Weinstein. Trying to shift blame to others is an attempt to scapegoat others for Weinstein's actions.

Harvey is a big boy. He bullied, he sexually assaulted, he punished victims for speaking up, he sought, over and over, to cover up the fact by silencing victims.

I don't know why anyone would logically want to blame Meryl Streep or Hillary Clinton except to scapegoat powerful women for a man's perverted and possibly criminal actions.

Paltrow was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and film producer-director Bruce Paltrow. She has a younger brother, Jake Paltrow, who is a director and screenwriter. Paltrow's father was Jewish, while her mother is from a Christian background. She was raised celebrating "both Jewish and Christian holidays." Her brother had a traditional Bar Mitzvah when he turned 13. Her father's Ashkenazi Jewish family emigrated from Belarus and Poland, while her mother has Pennsylvania Dutch (German), and some English, ancestry. Paltrow's paternal great-great-grandfather was a rabbi in Nowogród, Poland, and a descendant of the well known "Paltrowicz" family of rabbis from Kraków. Her half-cousin is actress Katherine Moennig (through her mother). She is a second cousin of former U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-08) (through her father). Her uncle is opera singer and actor Harry Danner, whose daughter, actress Hillary Danner, is Paltrow's cousin and close friend. Paltrow recalls their family gatherings: "Hillary and I always had this in common, and do to this day [...] cooking for people we love, eating, hanging out as a family. It's how we were raised. It's what we do." Another cousin is Rebekah Paltrow Neumann, whose spouse is the Israeli-Americal billionaire Adam Neumann, founder of WeWork.

Paltrow was raised in Santa Monica, where she attended Crossroads School, before enrolling in the Spence School, a private girls' school in New York City. Later, she briefly studied anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before dropping out to act. She is an "adopted daughter" of Talavera de la Reina (Spain), where at 15, she spent a year as an exchange student and learned to speak Spanish. She is also conversant in French.

Becasue they resisted his advances. So he treated her a bit better than those who were nobodies. I'm surprised anyone thinks he tried anything with Streep or Clinton! That's kind of ridiculous than anyone would think other women would even bring their stories to them. They shared stories primarily to protect other vulnerable women.

And his actions don't even scratch the surface of the "casting couch" behavior that goes on in Hollywood, for "consenting" adults and children and adolescents (I might even say ESPECIALLY for children and adolescents). This shit has been going on since the very first person ever got off a bus near a studio lot in Hollywood looking to be a star. Being molested is just considered part of the territory there and something that happens when you are "paying your dues". But you NEVER talk about it. It is a sleazy, predatory Fight Club.

I can't even fathom why Weinstein's story is now out there for everyone to see, except that he must have made the wrong person mad. I wondered the same about Cosby. For decades, his behavior went completely under the radar. Now we're all just hearing about it. Why?

Our friends across the pond have Jimmy Seville. Another "surprise" long-established predator. How did he get away with what he did for so long?

Well, they get away with it because when you go out to Hollywood or New York or London or wherever to be a star, and you feel like you will do anything to achieve that, when you encounter someone that you think can make that happen, they will ask you to make good on that level of commitment. And you will do what they ask. And you will hate yourself afterwards, but you will never speak of it or even think of it again.

"Now we're all just hearing about it. Why?"

Couple people had enough, and it was enough critical mass, he doesn't seem so invincible, his mystique of power has evaporated. Now he's just a vicious piece of shit with a lot of money, and it turns out, that's not quite enough to win the day.

Not by itself.

It's the POWER that protected him, and that is by and large, an illusion. So now it's unwinding like any other Ponzi scheme. He had one of power, based on confidence, and it's unravelling just like a financial Ponzi scheme, like Madoff, or Enron.

...however both of her parents worked in motion pictures and they were aware of how things worked in Hollywood. How could this have happened when her parents should have warned her about Weinstein, and taken steps to prevent him from coming on to her?

Also Mira Sorvino, whose dad is Paul Sorvino a long-time Hollywood actor. Same with Angelina Jolie. These Hollywood kids needed to be protected by their parents. Where's the outrage from these people? Weinstein got away with it for so many years because these Hollywood stars closed their eyes and let him have their own children.

It has for a long, long time and probably always will, unfortunately.

Read the long list of established Hollywood notables, people who seemingly aren't desperate for acting jobs and should be able to be strong for others, who continue to lobby for Roman Polanski's return to our country and the Hollywood community.

I like to obtain more facts. I haven't read anything that that indicates those parents withheld information from their adult children.

I have read at this point nothing to indicate that these specific parents were enablers of Weinstein.

Sexual harassment should never happen, but I give credit to Pitt for confronting Weinstein at a time when (obviously) many were letting Weinstein's behavior go unaddressed.

People's initial reaction is "why didn't they come forward when it happened." The truth is, the game on this is very refined and designed to prey upon the mindset of young people who are looking to further their career and not ruffle too many feathers.

I'm sure women have it a lot worse, but I experienced perhaps a fraction of this when I was working as a stage performer. I was a little older and less naive, but there were lots of older guys with influence who made it clear they could "take me under their wing". I wasn't the type who experienced this regularly, but I had friends who did. It's rarely in the context of a producer throwing someone down on the couch and having their way with them after you sang 16 bars.

You audition, they like you, they get to know you. They can't use you in this project, but they have something perfect coming up and they take an interest in your talent. You talk on the phone about your career, hey, come to lunch, hey, let's have dinner and discuss what they've got lined up. They can help you talk to the right people. In the process of getting to know the person they make an advance and it's very easy to think "oh, this is on the level of person to person and he likes me, it's has nothing to do with what we're discussing professionally". Some people refuse, and some people see it as part of the networking.

And either way, it usually gets filed in the cabinet of "Okay, lesson learned, not gonna do that again." You don't want to ruin your own career or theirs even...you're still talking to them and they still have influence, and you don't want to rock the boat that threatens everyone.

With perspective later in life, hypothetically seeing how this person who might have taken advantage of you if you'd let them is getting awards from humanitarian groups, or ... say running for President of the United States, where their level of influence they will reach is more dangerous beyond a community circle where you can personally warn people about this behavior beforehand... It makes sense with more wisdom and life security that someone might years later go, "Hey, before you carve the name on that plaque, talk to me first..."

According to TV journalist Lauren Sivan Weinstein once trapped her in the hallway of a restaurant that was closed to the public and masturbated in front of her until he ejaculated. The incident took place a decade ago and at that time she was a news anchor on a local cable channel in New York, Long Island 12. The night of the incident started with Sivan meeting Weinstein and others at Cipriani, a well-known Italian restaurant in Manhattan. She later rode with him and others to Socialista, a Cuban-themed club and restaurant in which Weinstein and Giuseppe Cipriani were investors. Sivan recalled that, while at the club, Weinstein asked her to join him on a tour of its restaurant, Cafe Socialista. Sivan said she reluctantly agreed and they went downstairs to the restaurant. The restaurant was closed by that time and he took her to the kitchen, where a couple of staffers were cleaning up. Weinstein then dismissed the two staffers in the kitchen. Once they left, Sivan says Weinstein leaned in and tried to kiss her. Sivan rejected that attempt and told him she had a long-term boyfriend. Weinstein then said to Sivan, "Well, can you just stand there and shut up." At this point, Weinstein and Sivan were in a vestibule between the kitchen and bathrooms. The only way for Sivan to get away from Weinstein required her to get past him and go through the kitchen. Sivan says she was trapped by Weinstein's body and was intimidated. Weinstein then proceeded to expose himself to Sivan and began to masturbate. Sivan said she was deeply shocked by Weinstein's behavior and was frozen and didn't know what to do or say. The incident in the vestibule didn't last long. Sivan says Weinstein ejaculated quickly into a potted plant that was in the vestibule and then proceeded to zip up his pants and they walked back into the kitchen. Sivan said, that the experience left her shocked, and while she told friends privately what happened, she remained quiet because she was in a long-term relationship and fearful of the power that Weinstein wielded in the media. Her accusation came a day after Weinstein was the subject of a bombshell New York Times report that revealed that he has settled at least eight sexual harassment claims. [from: Huffington Post, Oct.6 2017].
The character Harvey in Steven Soderbergh's Hollywood satire Full Frontal (2002) is clearly based on Harvey Weinstein. Played by Jeff Garlin, he's over-weight and drinks diet coke, just like Weinstein in real-life. Another character in the movie is a film producer, who gets sexual arousal through massages, which might have been a reference to Weinstein, too.

One of my favorite films that I ever distributed is Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master (2012). Believe me, it'll live in history long after most celluloid fades. When you watch it and then watch something like John Huston's documentary Let There Be Light (1946), the subtext of "The Master" is understanding an entire generation's need - especially World War II veterans - to find some sort of peace from the horrors of war. Some people decided to lead normal lives, some drank, and some found deep religion. In the case of "The Master", they turned to a cult to heal pain. It's more complicated than that of course, but I bring it up because it's a daring and fantastic movie that people frequently remark about when they see me. And that movie got an 'F' Cinemascore - so what? Apparently so did Mother! (2017). "Mother!" is another one of these movies that will live forever. [Sept. 2017]
