Harvey Weinstein expelled from motion picture academy

Source: LA Times

Embattled film mogul Harvey Weinstein — a once-dominant force in the Academy Awards who rewrote the rules of Oscar campaigning — has been expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in response to mounting allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him.

The film academy’s 54-member board of governors, which includes such industry luminaries as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Kathleen Kennedy and Whoopi Goldberg, voted in an emergency meeting on Saturday morning to remove Weinstein from the organization’s ranks in an unprecedented public rebuke of a prominent industry figure. The move marked the latest blow in Weinstein’s stunning downfall and, in symbolic terms, amounts to a virtual expulsion from Hollywood itself.

In removing Weinstein from its ranks, the academy said in a statement, “We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”

It demonstrates what we already knew. Business and in this case Hollywood has higher standards of behavior than Republicans.

One down, probably hundreds to go.
There's nothing especially terrible about Weinstein. Hollywood is full of those types. I hope someday they are all exposed for the horrible people they are and kicked out.

He's just the one that got caught. Hollywood needs to fully clean house of these people. Seems like everyone knew about his proclivities. No one said anything in order to protect their careers. Just like we say about police: If a cop finds out about criminal activities or abuse carried on by other cops, and do nothing, they're just as guilty as far as I am concerned. If Tom Hanks knows that Producer X or Director Y likes to molest kids or requires sex to cast someone, and does nothing, X and Y should face sanctions (jail and other punishments), and Hanks is just as guilty.

I could have worded it a lot better. But you're right. The reformation of Hollywood should start with Weinstein. It shouldn't end with him.

Not really, but it is a strong and meaningful sentiment and I am glad to hear it said in such stark terms by what I have to admit is a powerful socio-cultural institution.

Time will tell, though. The treatment of the women who speak out, by both the academy and the industry in general, will make it clear over time.

Maybe he has an idea, now, of how those women felt, being blackmailed to have sex in return for a job or ability to stay in the business.

But he still has lots of money, assets, and I'm sure plenty of rich friends, to give him solace.
