Sessions Won't Make 'Blanket Commitment' On Not Jailing Journalists

Source: Talking Points Memo

By TIERNEY SNEED Published OCTOBER 18, 2017 2:43 PM

Attorney General Jeff Sessions would not give a straight answer to Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s (D-MN) request to confirm that he will not put reporters in jail “for doing their jobs.”

“I don’t know if I can make a blanket commitment to that effect,” Sessions said during his hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“But I would say this, we have not taken any aggressive action against the media at this point,” he continued. “We have matters that involve the most serious national security issues that put our country at risk, and we will utilize the authorities that we have legally and constitutionally if we have to.”

“We always try to find an alternative way, as you probably know, Senator Klobuchar, to directly confronting media persons,” he added. “But that is not a total blanket protection.”

They are trying to destroy everything good and promote everything bad to destroy our country, enrich themselves personally and help their BFF, Putin.

The media helped make Trump, now they are the target if they don't keep him in power.

These people are trampling constitutional rights (except for those ones that involve guns) in a very real and tangible way. They've defended "papers please" totalitarianism (like AZ SB1070 and Stop-And-Frisk in NYC), and now the POTUS and the AG are both defending the trampling of the 1st Amendment to cover up their terrible little dirty secrets.

They've spent years sowing mistrust in the media (and the media hasn't helped by being so profit-driven that they'll cover Trump for ratings instead of spending 30 seconds talking about policy during an election cycle), and it is now paying dividends. Be de-legitimizing the major news outlets like CNN, MSNBC, etc... they are legitimizing the fringe right-wing "news" conspiracy outlets like InfoWards and Breitbart. And it doesn't even matter, because they've sown doubt in the very idea of facts at all. Nothing means anything any more, and they can say anything they want without fear of fact checking or repercussions, so long as they make sure it's how people are feeling.

The far right is not healthy for the country, for the continent, for the hemisphere, or for the world. We are in dark days indeed.

I can sort of understand Sessions' statement. The question was way to broad. Define 'doing their job'. Sessions is a total weasel, and a liar to boot, but I can't see him giving a 'blanket commitment' to the question.
