Trump calls to 'keep America safe' citing rising UK crime rate

Source: The Hill

BY BROOKE SEIPEL - 10/20/17 07:04 AM EDT

President Trump early Friday tweeted about rising crime rates in the United Kingdom "amid the spread of Radical Islamic terror," following a report by the U.K.'s Office for National Statistics (ONS) that crime in England and Wales rose 13 percent over the last year.

According to the National Statistics report, however, much of that was not related to terrorism. The report said, "of the 664 homicides recorded in the year ending June 2017, there were 35 relating to the London and Manchester terror attacks."

The ONS report also said that sexual offenses were up 19 percent; the number of homicides increased by 46, excluding the Manchester and London terror attacks; and much of the rise in violent offenses was due to the addition of new crime recording categories such as "violence without injury" and "stalking and harassment."

Crime minister Sarah Newton told BBC News "much" of the rise in violent offenses was because of better crime recording.

Trump touts Senate passage of budget resolution

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 10/20/17 07:24 AM EDT

President Trump on Friday hailed the Senate's approval of a budget resolution as a critical first step in Republicans' efforts to implement sweeping tax cuts.

"The Budget passed late last night, 51 to 49. We got ZERO Democrat votes with only Rand Paul (he will vote for Tax Cuts) voting against," Trump wrote on Twitter.

"This now allows for the passage of large scale Tax Cuts (and Reform), which will be the biggest in the history of our country!"

The vote late Thursday night will allow Republicans to pass tax reform legislation with 50 votes instead of 60, meaning that the GOP will not need to rally any Democratic support for the measure.
