ISIS Group Behind Niger Ambush That Killed Four U.S. Soldiers, Pentagon Says

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday the Pentagon believes a group tied to the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) is responsible for the October 4 ambush in Niger that left four U.S. soldiers dead. "Our assessment right now is it is an ISIS-affiliated group," General Joseph Dunford said in a press conference.
The Pentagon had been reluctant to place blame on any specific group. On Friday, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) told Newsweek it would be "inappropriate" to speculate on which extremist organization was responsible for the attack.

A number of terrorost organizations operate in the area near where the ambush occurred, including Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and ISIS affiliates.
The ISIS-linked group currently being blamed, known as ISIS in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), has not been viewed as a very serious threat by experts on the region. Up to this point, ISGS has been responsible for a few small-scale attacks. If the Pentagon fully confirms ISGS was behind the October 4 incident, experts have said this would be its most ideologically significant attack to date.

(21,650 posts)How were they able to get to our guys to beign with? Because Cheeto pissed off neighboring Chad - which is a poor country; but knows the Sahara better than almost anyone - and thus forced them to withdraw their valuable support.
If this had happened under a Hillary Clinton presidency, we'd be hearing non-stop howling from the GOP chicken-hawk crowd.

(25,111 posts)Effing with their supposed ally, Chad, probably over "money" caused this shit to happen. His administration re: CIA operatives are in Afghanistan supposedly training them to fight ISIL calling it an aggressive and violent (against the enemy) BS.
I fear more of our soldiers dying.

Haven't heard about any group like that in Niger. France has been there for years, along with USA corporations? Why hasn't congress or senate mentioned Niger needs Americans 1000 boots on the ground?
Where did the equipment, weapons and trucks come from? Russia signed some deals for uranium ore mining. Did they set-up and fund IS in Africa?
Why can't Corporations pay for their own security?

(16,254 posts)I've seen lots of ISIS-linked groups blamed for attacks and let them slide, but for some reason, my ESP or gut feeling does not believe this claim at all. Isn't it interesting that after 4 weeks+ since the attack, after the fiasco over the tweets from Trump in regard to his call to Mrs. Johnson, after the backlash to Gen. Kelly's comments, ISIS pops up?
How long have they known this?

All that time playing golf when he could have been planning missions and not killing soldiers by assigning lesser qualified underlings to the task.
