President Trump informed Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) Friday that he will shrink Bears Ears National Monument, a 1.35 million-acre protected area in southeast Utah that is prized by many tribal leaders but opposed by several state and federal Republican officials.
Im approving the Bears Ears recommendation for you, Orrin, Trump told the senator in a phone call Friday morning, according to Hatchs office, just before Hatch stepped onstage for an event on women in technology in Utah.
In late August, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke recommended paring back the boundaries of Bears Ears and asking Congress to make less-restrictive designations within it, such as national recreation areas or national conservation areas. The monument, which contains tens of thousands of cultural artifacts, has become the most prominent symbol of controversy surrounding the 1906 Antiquities Act.
In the report, Zinke proposed cutting the size of between four and six national monuments established by Trumps predecessors, and changing the way another six would be managed.

Don't know if it was a state or federal law, but when I lived in CA, I had a number of old Mono tribe grinding stones around my farm. My little farmhouse was 100+ years old, but any new construction in the area had to be a certain distance from any artifacts.

The Mono natives would go up to higher elevation in summer in what is now King's Canyon and Sequoia Nat'l Parks. Then in the winter, they would travel down to our elevation, about 2,000 feet.

Native American faiths are no more the "right" religion and less subject to the Establishment Clause than European or Asian faiths. One bias is no more meritorious than the other.

They put such a store on the Bible, which has a lot of ugly human stuff in it, but when it comes to the beautiful earth that we all came from and are connected to, they treat it like trash.
