Feds: Mississippi county runs 'school-to-prison pipeline'

"Students most affected by this system are African-American children and children with disabilities," the Justice Department said.
The federal agency's civil rights division seeks "meaningful negotiations" in 60 days to end the constitutional violations or else a federal lawsuit would be filed against state, county and local officials in Meridian, according to a Justice Department letter dated Friday to those officials.

The alleged mistreatment included youngsters being "crammed into small, filthy cells and tormented with the arbitrary use of Mace as a punishment for even the most minor infractions -- such as 'talking too much' or failing to sit in the 'back of their cells,'" the center said in a statement.

On Friday, the U.S. Justice Department accused Meridian police of automatically arresting all students referred by the city's public schools and then sending them to the county juvenile justice system, "where existing due process protections are illusory and inadequate," the federal letter says.

(15,719 posts)When the schools were integrated, the very same year there were 5 schools at white churches and 2 academy schools which allowed members children to attend. Only the very well to do white people could attend.
It is still bad enough that Murphy Oil Corp has a scholarship program for the children who went to public school.
It pissed off a lot of doctors and lawyers, but Charlie Murphy's kids all went to public school, not to all white schools.
I think now they allow wealthy people of color to attend. It just costs money to keep your kids away from the poor people, they don't worry about color that much any more.

(32,139 posts)what you describe is happening.
We are allowing the growth of a monster industry that will NEED to find ways to imprison more and more of us just to sustain itself.
Making the imprisonment of human beings an enterprise for profit is beyond wrong. It is evil.

(18,998 posts)The fatal flaw in capitalism is that once an industry becomes powerful enough to influence government it can never be destroyed...and must always grow larger every quarter...that is the only job and responsibility the CEO has....to grow the company and make more money for the shareholders...they teach that in business schools everywhere....and react with disdain if you bring in shared cultural values or any concern for real people.
