Fancy suits at center of ex-Trump campaign chief charges
Source: AP
At $7,500 apiece, the handmade custom suits former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort wore were meant to dazzle and impress.
An indictment unsealed Monday detailing conspiracy and money laundering charges against him suggests they certainly caught the eye of special counsel Robert Mueller.
A luxury clothing store in New York is among 19 vendors Manafort paid some $12 million to between 2008 and 2014 from foreign bank accounts he didn't disclose, using offshore companies registered in countries such as Cyprus and the Grenadines to make the purchases, court papers allege.
Besides the suits, Manafort used the money to buy antique rugs and art, make payments on three Range Rovers and install an $112,825 audio-visual system in his Hamptons home all without paying taxes on that income, the indictment charges.

(14,537 posts)At over 12 million, I doubt he has worn the same suit twice. That is over 1,500 suits. One a day for over 4 years.
And we have veterans sleeping on the streets.

(62,444 posts)If you have a blue collar occupation, you can deduct payments for clothing required for work, but that doesnt apply to suits in white collar occupations.

(13,614 posts)For blue collar occupations, the clothes required for work are deductible only if they couldn't be considered ordinary street clothes. So a jeans + jeans jacket combo isn't deductible.

(62,444 posts)I mean, people go out in pajamas and slippers now. And I dont mean confused old folks who went through the wrong door and got lost. I mean just people out in their pajamas and slippers.
And I dont even shop at Wal-Mart.

I have a cold from hell, so I told him I wasn't going to get dressed much. Or maybe I should get dressed and go to the store to get milk after I dropped him off. Nah, I'll just drop you off and get milk later. Honest to God his reply was "Well go to Wal-Mart, you'll fit right in."

(49,038 posts)He probably sold the suits on to reclaim cash, sold some back to the store to reclaim cash.
He may have given some away, as favors or partial payments for stuff.
Like, "OK, Charlie, go to my favorite store and fit yourself out for $15,000 on my account. I'll call ahead to let them know you are coming."
