World Series 2017: Astros Beat Dodgers for First Title
Source: NY TIMES
In the franchises 56th season, the Houston Astros are finally champions after closing out the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-1 win in Game 7 of what was a thrilling World Series from start to finish.
It was a Series defined by relief pitching and home runs, and Game 7 had both. Neither starting pitcher made it out of the third inning, with the teams combining to use eight relievers. On offense, the Astros were powered to victory by George Springer, the teams center fielder, who homered for the fourth consecutive game, and tied Reggie Jackson and Chase Utley for the most home runs in a single World Series with five.
That the game had just one home run was almost an upset in a Series that included a record-setting 25 home runs, which shattered the previous mark of 22 set by the Anaheim Angels and the San Francisco Giants in 2002.
For all of the drama of the previous six games, the winner-take-all Game 7 was relatively quiet after Houston exploded for five runs in the first two innings against starter Yu Darvish and then simply held on to win.

(10,495 posts)including me cheered! Then we waited, and waited, then touched down and caught up the the 4th inning. Just drove 90 miles from the Houston airport catching bits and pieces, including trying to make some sense of the Spanish broadcast which was the only one clear, and finally caught up again with two outs to go through the end! Sweet!
I can remember going the Astrodome as a kid and watching Jose Cruz, Nolan Ryan...and some of the best pitching. Later watched Bagwell and Biggio. Their biggest problem was they never had enough hitting, and past owners would trade off young pitching stars from their farm clubs, lots of really great ones, when it was time to renew the contracts. We are a bigger market for the budget of the club to be relatively small. Now things are different with ownership willing to cut the deal for Verhlander to make a run for it. The big question since their stars are so young overall, will they pay to keep them!
I will savor this WS win and hope the best for the future. This area (all around the Texas Gulf Coast) needed this!
I have to say they were two very closely matched teams and it does suck hard to lose a series like this one, especially after the season they put together. They had a couple of epic games in this series that had us all on a roller coaster and reminded me how great sports can be! Hats off to the Dodgers!

She won three times.
We have a second black man as mayor.
We have had two women as mayors.
We are a blue city.

(3,076 posts)... hot dogging on throw to first base leading to an overthrow, man on base, first run scored for Houston. Where the bleep is Tommy Lasorda when you need him? I am surprised that Steve Garvey didn't give the hot dog a royal chewing.
Just my two cents.

(19,201 posts)since birth. My hat is off to the Houston Astros.
This is something the city of Houston - still recovering from a devastating natural disaster - can be extremely proud of. I hope it gives them all a shot in the arm, and somehow brings a little sunshine into a very dark time in their lives.
Congratulations to all you Houston fans! You deserve it!

(3,076 posts)... but they were sharp for the time. BTW, I couldn't help but notice that the Astro's uniforms looked like 1980's Baltimore Orioles and the days of Earl Weaver.
