Trump defends decision to charge NYC terror suspect in federal court

President Trump on Thursday defended his administration’s decision to charge the suspect in the New York City truck attack in federal court rather then sending him to the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system...” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The president also reiterated his call for the suspect, 29 year-old Sayfullo Saipov, to face the death penalty. “...There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!” Trump said.

The president on Wednesday said he would “certainly consider” sending the suspect in the truck attack that left eight people dead in lower Manhattan to Guantanamo Bay.
