Franken Blasts Sessions: Papadopoulos Docs Show 'You Failed To Tell The Truth'

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), whose questioning of Attorney General Jeff Sessions in his January confirmation hearing kicked off a chain of events that ultimately led to the appointment of a special counsel, on Thursday had some more pointed questions for Sessions.
Franken included his questions in a scathing letter to Sessions after court documents unsealed Monday revealed that President Donald Trumps former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos in March 2016 floated the idea of setting up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to several reports, Sessions was present at the meeting when Papadopoulos made the suggestion, though Sessions previously denied being aware of any communications between members of Trumps campaign and the Russian government. Papadopoulos claimed he had connections that could help arrange the meeting between Trump and Putin.
Once again, developments in the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election have brought to light evidence that you failed to tell the truth about your interactions with Russian operatives during the campaign, as well as your awareness of Russian contacts by other members of the Trump campaign team, Franken wrote.

(8,138 posts)Yes there are ethical standards you are supposed to go by, but Sessions recused himself so he could just as easily unrecuse himself. For that matter, he could say he recused himself and be involved anyway, much like Devin Nunes is doing.
After all, who would punish the AG for it?

(51 posts)The following has been true since the invention of politics. Priorities are (and not necessarily in this order):
- My reelection
- My big cash donors (Kochs' and Mercers' first in line)
- Greed, pure and simple
- My parties agenda
- Feel free to add here -
The GOP has taken these qualities to a very unhealthy extreme. What is clearly being demonstrated now is their lowest lowest priorities are us common folk and patriotism, and I don't mean standing for the national anthem. It is supporting the constitution, the rule of law, and doing what is right for the country.
I won't go into all the wrongs being done. You know them as well as I do. I'll add two things:
I came of age during Watergate. I was 1S (student deferment) until I finished college and immediately reclassified 1A (prime time, ready to go) with a very low lottery number. If Nixon hadn't started pulling out troops from Viet Nam by then I would have been inline for a M16. The day I heard of the Watergate break-in I knew in my heart Nixon was involved. I watched the hearings everyday. I kept my McGovern bumper sticker on my car until the day Nixon resigned. I sincerely though my generation had learned a valuable lesson. I'm heartbroken those lessons have been largely forgotten. Funny story: By law all males were required to keep their draft cards on their person. Mine disintegrated when I accidentally put my wallet through the washer.
My second point. I worked for a very large computer company for 28 years. The unofficial motto we all lived by was, "Do the Right Thing". For anyone who is not a sociopath (hint - he's orange) that should not be a hard concept to understand and use as a moral compass.
Finally, I fully support the Draft - Sons and daughters of Congress and the Cabinet go first. That should rein in some of our ill founded adventures.

(15,740 posts)So much for Sessions' respect for the rule of law he's sworn to uphold.
He is a disgrace to this nation. Lock him up and throw away the key.

(51,076 posts)the republiCONs fought tooth and nail to keep Senator Franken from taking his seat in the Senate.
I'll go so far as to say Senator Franken is our best Democratic Senator today. He leaves no stone unturned
I'd love to see Senator Al Franken in our Oval Office as President of these United States of America.
