Valrie Plante will be next mayor of Montreal, beating out Denis Coderre

Valérie Plante of Projet Montréal is the next mayor of Montreal, scoring a major upset over veteran politician Denis Coderre in today's municipal election.

Coderre conceded to Plante in a speech at his campaign headquarters, announcing he is quitting municipal politics.

Plante, 43, won over voters on a promise to improve public transit (including a new Metro line), alleviate traffic woes and make the city more family friendly.

She becomes the first woman to be elected mayor of Montreal.
