Study: U.S. Spent $5.6 Trillion on Wars in Middle East, Asia

Source: The Daily Beast

The U.S. has spent $5.6 trillion since 2001 on the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan, according to a new study. That figure, according to the Wall Street Journal, is more than triple the Pentagon’s narrow estimate of $1.5 trillion, which was released by the Defense Department earlier this year. The Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs at Brown University conducted the new study, which aimed to reflect the costs of war not considered by the Pentagon—including the costs that weren’t taken on by the Defense Department in the first place. “War costs are more than what we spend in any one year on what’s called the pointy end of the spear,” the study’s author, Neta Crawford, told the Journal. “There are all these other costs behind the spear, and there are consequences of using it, that we need to include.”

like public transportation, health care for all, free college...and so many other things that most countries make sure that their citizens have to live their lives. We aren't competitive anymore. We're just war mongers and have a fucking idiot for POTUS. ugh

I don't understand why? The richest country in the world and we have a homeless problem, our housing is cheaply made and too expensive and we have roads that tear up your vehicle. I'm just so sick of it.

Over a 15-year period and the population at approx. 310 million.

That would buy a lot of beans and 'taters, folks.

The Costs of War project, based at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, was launched in 2011 to document the costs of the post-9/11 wars in a comprehensive fashion.

That Watson Report is making for interesting, informative reading.

I recall some wise heads estimating our total cost of the Iraq war at around $3T toward the (semi-)end of that conflict and most talking heads thought it was crazy.

These reports also do not - and probably cannot - factor in psychological costs, either to people in those war zones or in the USA. Nor does it include long-term costs to those economies due to loss of human capital, or the "what could have been".

There's also no accounting for loss of culture and community - two of the most important factors to peaceful human existence.

I agree the constant wars and squandering of trillions by DOD are a waste, we still have to care for our Veterans. Likely the post Vietnam wars, current past 10 yrs of wars- true costs won't peak for another 20-30 years.

"Furthermore, the $5.6 trillion figure does not include the money the U.S. commits to operations in the Horn of Africa, Uganda, Trans-Sahara, the Caribbean and Central America as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Nor does it tally spending through the Department of Defense European Reassurance Initiative meant to deter Russia; money for Operation Odyssey Lightning, which paid for airstrikes against ISIS in Libya beginning in 2016; or U.S. counterterrorism activities taking place in dozens of countries across the world."

the report’s total does not include the substantial costs of war to state and local governments — most significantly, the costs of caring for veterans — or the millions of dollars in excess military equipment the U.S. donates to countries in and near the war zones.”
