Iran-Iraq earthquake: Deadly tremor hits border region

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake has shaken the northern border region between Iran and Iraq, killing at least 335 people and injuring thousands more.
One Iranian aid agency said 70,000 people needed shelter after the quake, one of the largest this year.
The majority of those who died were in Iran's western Kermanshah province. Nearly 4,000 were said to be injured.
Seven people died in Iraq, where people fled into the streets in the capital, Baghdad.
Mosques in the city have been broadcasting prayers through loudspeakers.

(38,448 posts)Tehran, Iran (CNN) At least 452 people were killed and thousands injured after a powerful earthquake struck near the border of Iran and Iraq late Sunday.
The earthquake is the deadliest of the year, eclipsing the one that hit Mexico City in September, and was felt as far away as Turkey and Pakistan.

(206,072 posts)Can you imagine if this was in a Western country?? It would be breaking news 24/7! And I'm afraid you're right, the death toll is going to rise as rescue operations move forward. I'm hoping that other countries - including the U.S. - will be sending help ASAP with experts and equipment.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is promising to rebuild the countrys earthquake-devastated area in the shortest timespan possible.
Rouhani, who was visiting the area Tuesday, said his administration plans to support reconstruction with both handouts and loans.
He says he appreciates foreign countries for expressing sympathy with victims of Sundays temblor, which measured magnitude 7.3. The quake killed hundreds and injured thousands in the border region of Iran and Iraq.
Authorities say the quake destroyed more than 12,000 homes and local reports say many people are still in need of tents and blankets.
