UPDATE 12:02 p.m.:
Attorney General Jeff Sessions, pressed by Republicans Tuesday on why the Department of Justice has not appointed a special counsel to investigate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said the facts needed to justify one before his department would act.
"'Looks like' is not enough basis to appoint a special counsel," Sessions said.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday it would be inappropriate for the president to direct him to target a political rival, after the Justice Department released a letter hinting at the prospect of investigating years-old matters connected to Democrat Hillary Clinton.
"I have not been improperly influenced and would not be improperly influenced" by President Donald Trump, Sessions said during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee.

(32,734 posts)I give Jeff Sessions credit for figuring that out.
He's in enough trouble already, no need to go looking for more.

(25,970 posts)I fully expected lickspittle lapdog Jeffy Bo to jump on the opportunity. Guess the accusations against Hillary Clinton are so specious that even Sessions can't support appointing SC.

(58,785 posts)would be a far bigger scandal than Moore. There's no case. It's all nonsense, and investigation would prove that and even provide her another 13-hour showcase to show them up for corrupt fools, if they were stupid enough to do twice. Which they are, of course.
Sessions actually has a little subspecialty in abuse of power to railroad people into prison, but I'm guessing a bunch of right-wing leaders contacted him to make sure he doesn't touch it.

(13,431 posts)I suspect most Republicans in DC know there is no case for linking Clinton to the Russsians via Uranium One or Ukraine or whatever. However, the Republican base is angry about it because right wing media is pressing the baseless conspiracy theories as a way to distract from the 45-Russia investigations. As we have seen time and again, the right wing base drives the media narrative far more than the left wing base drives it.

(34,661 posts)Bill and Hillary Clinton. When the one Congress Person held up a copy of Sessions accusations against Bill Clinton,Sessions was pissed that his own words came back to haunt. It is all about destroying the Clinton's and any and all of their accomplishments.

(49,034 posts)You have it reversed:
Plural: becomes --> going after Clintons
Plural: --> Notice I say Clintons
Possessive: --> Sessions' accusations
Plural: --> the Clintons

(14,176 posts)They have been too busy...dismantling every last good thing Obama did. And pushing through their 'tax reform' to secure a bigger slice of the pie. Once most of the dirty work is done, then we may see yet another Clinton investigation.
Because we have seen in the past, they have no qualms about spending taxpayers money on pointless, drawn out baseless investigations on Democrats before. Because it works on a large segment. Where there's smoke there's fire. And with RW radio and Fox News to shape the narrative each day, making it look like they are guilty even before the hearings conclude, they can still damage Democrats and fire up their own base.
