Zimbabwes Military, in Apparent Takeover, Says It Has Custody of Mugabe

Source: New York Times

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe’s military said early Wednesday that it had taken custody of President Robert Mugabe, the world’s oldest head of state and one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, in what increasingly appeared to be a military takeover in the southern African nation.

After apparently seizing the state broadcaster, ZBC, two uniformed officers said in a short predawn announcement that “the situation in our country has moved to another level.” While denying that the military had seized power, they said that Mr. Mugabe and his family “are safe and sound, and their security is guaranteed.”

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice,” said the main speaker, who was identified as Maj. Gen. S. B. Moyo, the army’s chief of staff.

General Moyo — who was not widely known to the public but who was considered close to the commander of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, Gen. Constantine Chiwenga — warned that “any provocation will be met with an appropriate response.”

This appears to be targeted at his wife and her supporters
Mnangagwa, the number 2 in Zimbabwe and considered successor was replaced along with several of his allies. This was believed by ZDF Commander Chiwenga as a way to clear the way for his wife, Grace, to succeed him.
Mnangagwa, while not the best person available, is a better successor than Grace, as Grace tends to be similar to il douche (trump) in her love of all things stylish, pomp, ceremony, etc. She also assaulted a woman while she was in South Africa. The police were unable to arrest her because of diplomatic immunity.

Kudzai Chipanga, the leader of Zanu-PF's youth wing, has been arrested in Harare, a day after he said his supporters were ready to die in the defence of President Robert Mugabe.

The youth wing supports President Mugabe's wife, Grace, as his successor.

Newspaper owner Trevor Ncube tweeted:

Mr Chipanga openly questioned Gen Constantino Chiwenga after the military chief said on Monday that the army was prepared to act to end purges within Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

The regional context is important here. It appears Emerson Mnangagwa, the vice president Mugabe fired, entered South Africa last week and then left today to return to Zimbabwe without impediment. This means Pretoria - and the region generally - is certainly not unhappy with what is happening there.

So any transition that puts Mnangagwa in power will likely have backing of neighbours - especially the biggest and richest among them.

Tweets from the unverified @YLZANUPF1 Twitter account, which are believed to come from the Zanu-PF youth league, strongly suggest this wing of the ruling party – widely considered to be the only faction that may be likely to take to the streets to defend Grace Mugabe and her allies – is falling into line with the military’s actions. That means violence is unlikely and Grace Mugabe and her associates are in a lot of trouble, to put it mildly.
...
In another very important development, Emmerson Mnangagwa, the vice-president fired by Mugabe, is back in the country. He flew into Manyame airbase this morning. He’s always had a lot of support in the army and it’s very likely he’ll be taking over as the de facto head of government, with Mugabe, 93, as a figurehead.
