WASHINGTON Trump administration officials said Friday the White House is sending Congress an additional $44 billion emergency recovery request for states and territories affected by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
The aid package falls short of what officials in Texas and Puerto Rico have sought for storm recovery, including $61 billion requested by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. White House officials said however that they plan to make additional aid proposals in the coming months as full cost estimates come in.
The request represents the third aid installment the three months since Harvey made landfall in Texas. Congress already has approved $52 billion for a series of hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast, Florida, Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean.
Abbott and other Texas officials expressed disappointment and frustration over the announcement.
