Alabama ex-cop says she was tasked with keeping Roy Moore away from cheerleaders at high school games

BRAD REED
21 NOV 2017 AT 12:53 ET

A retired Alabama police officer told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday that she had to keep an eye on Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore in the 1980s at local high school football games because he would regularly harass the team’s teenage cheerleaders.

Faye Gary, who for 37 years was an officer at the Gadsden Police Department, explained to Mitchell that Moore’s reputation for pursuing underage girls was widely known throughout the community.

“We were also told to watch him at the ballgames, and make sure that he didn’t, you know, hang around with the cheerleaders,” said Gary.

I specifically know two families where the male (father) molester was spared reporting to police when discovered. The threat from the family lawyer was always that mom would also be considered at fault too, since she should have known earlier. Dad's psychiatrist insisted that the young child was 'too young to remember' so it was extra cruel to create this storm. She backed down.

In the other case, the mom did not respond to bullying (this as in AL, btw) and went to court - the old boy system worked. Dad had money and pull. No charges, full custody. The child - now grown and married - is also a molester.

Typically the oldest age a high school teenager can be is 18. The lowest is 15. But we know he also dabbles with 14. These aren't women. They're children caught unaware by a deviant man's aggression.

I've been a member since the Bush years. Credibility is lost when BS is pushed. It's not fair that they get away with it while we hold to higher standards, but there it is. She had no idea this was about underage women until a week ago and there was never a formal complaint. I believe her at her word. I'm sure there are better witnesses and I hope they come forward. As for the discrepancy between me and others, I actually watched the interview. Did you?

She seemed to be trying to protect herself from any responsibility of not doing more to protect underage girls, by stating her ignorance of his interest in girls, by emphasizing that she only thought he was interested in young women. That's my take, that maybe she feels a bit guilty in hindsight and thought Andrea Mitchell might turn tables on her and criticize her for not doing more to protect the girls.

Roy Moore's defenders could actually use her statement to defend him, the way she says she only thought he was interested in young women, not girls and said that no complaints had ever been filed against him, although she says at the time she was expecting some complaints to be filed.

Seems nothing has changed. Moore will probably be elected. He's a "good 'ol boy."

Anything dirty, nasty and low-down rises to the top in Alabama.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think know Alabamans. I wish Alabama was not a part of the Union.

I love my country. I despise Alabama.

The kid behind me tickled me under my arms during math class in Alabama. The teacher said and saw nothing. What a bunch they are. A pretty, sweet, naive, young is just a plaything to a certain mean crew of men and boys, and no one says or does anything. At least, that's the way it was back then. It was long ago, but when I read about the Moore voters, I am reminded.

My apologies to the decent people in Alabama. I know you exist. You are like my friends were. But the number of low-down, nasty ones is higher than anywhere I have ever been other than maybe "Hollywood." And Hollywood is only a small part of Los Angeles or California. Most of California where I live is pretty decent. I was sexually harassed once in California. Guess what! The guy was from Alabama. So much for Alabama men.

And I invite you to respond if you think I am wrong about Alabama. Maybe things have changed, but my memories are really ugly.

Moore gave some years ago, recalling his meeting his wife, Kayla. And he FIRST saw her, at age 15 or 16, at a dance recital for girls. He was a grown man, a professional, with no children, attending a teen girl dance recital!! For what purpose? He was recounting to the interviewer how he remembered this lovely young girl, and when he came upon her again, YEARS later, he knew it was her. They married with her 24 and him 39. I wanted to throw up. He was just smiling and retelling this tale of romance like it was perfectly wonderful. But this old perv was and is one of THOSE guys, who hang around kiddie beauty pageants and recitals because that's what gets him going. There is a LOT more of this to come out.
