Crumbling Wall Causes Subway Derailment in Brooklyn
Source: New York Post
Debris plummeting from the wall of Brooklyn subway station caused a train to derail around 5:30 a.m Sunday.
Some 30 people were stuck inside the southbound R train when a portion of the wall fell onto the tracks at the 86th Street subway station in Bay Ridge, authorities said.
While no one was injured, the incident snarled train traffic for hours, forcing the MTA to close the station.
Photographs show the prefabricated tile lying across the tracks.
Paul Navarro, director of subway safety for the Transport Workers Union and track division chair of Maintenance of Way, said the station is likely to be closed for hours because workers at the station will now have to check that every wall panel is safely secured.
The train is still in the station. Its going to take a while, Navarro said. Its unfortunate, but thats whats going to happen when you have a subway system thats over 90 years old.

(10,202 posts)I immediately thought it had to be 86th St on the R line. That station was decrepit 50 years ago, when I took the (then) RR from there to school every day. Station is 100 years old and has never been included in any of the various upgrades done to other stations on the 4th Avenue Line over the past 50 years. No surprise here.
Nothing has changed in 50 years - except the gum machines, candy machines, scales, and soda machines are long gone:
