GOP pros fret over Paul Ryan

Source: Politico

Away from the cameras, and with all the usual assurances that people aren’t being quoted by name, there is an unmistakable consensus among Republican operatives in Washington: Romney has taken a risk with Ryan that has only a modest chance of going right — and a huge chance of going horribly wrong.

In more than three dozen interviews with Republican strategists and campaign operatives — old hands and rising next-generation conservatives alike — the most common reactions to Ryan ranged from gnawing apprehension to hair-on-fire anger that Romney has practically ceded the election.

“I think it’s a very bold choice. And an exciting and interesting pick. It’s going to elevate the campaign into a debate over big ideas. It means Romney-Ryan can run on principles and provide some real direction and vision for the Republican Party. And probably lose. Maybe big,” said former President George W. Bush senior adviser Mark McKinnon.

“Very not helpful down ballot — very,” said one top Republican consultant.

“This is the day the music died,”

Public opinion of him as of today is pretty much a function of how we've successfully been able to define him. The progressive side knows who he is, and the reich-wingers do, too. It's the folks who just don't pay any attention to politics until just before an election who, like always, will swing this election, and their first dose of him is going to be with him controlling his message, not so much our side getting the word out.

In any case, he either becomes Vice President, or the frontrunner for 2016, when Barack Obama's name will not be on the ballot. If the economy's recovered, perhaps anyone we nominate will be able to claim that mantle of success, if the economy still sucks, then the Repugs could nominate Donald Trump and the gasbag would win.

For a House member, he's already really well known and that is a result of self promotion efforts on his part. Those that don't know his face certainly do know his budget.
The 2016 part, well, few losing VPs are ever candidates for any major office again. In 4 years, he's Palin. Why you assume he'd be frontrunner is beyond me. Name a losing VP candidate who was a frontrunner in the next cycle. I can not think of even one. Much less one who became the nominee....he'll be Quayle, Ferraro, Jack Kemp (I had to google 'Dole running mate' to recall his name) or any of the other losing VP candidates that vanish into obscurity.

But IMO having Ryan on the ticket improves our odds, as opposed to a "harmless" pick like Portman. It's also evident that our side has grown a spine this time and will not hesitate to let people know exactly what the Ryan plan means for them.

I think the GOP has other people lined up for that. Historically, being the VP on a ticket that lost is not a good position (Edwards is a perfect example) and I don't think Ryan's aim is to be President right now.

As to his second sentence, I have no idea who he is talking about. I don't know anybody by that name.

As the political pendulum moved rightward, Democrats were often
frustratingly quiet about their core ideology. It's like they were
protecting themselves from the fray.

Now we've got what we always wanted, the GOP to expose their
true selves, and it ain't pretty, though they think it is, which is
even better.

I'm surprised Bush came right out and said it.

Same economic policies too.
Same housing boom and bust mentality.
Same job creation potential - Bush has worst record since WW2.

Same economic carnage come with GW Bush's "principles and vision".

Bush and Cheney are NOT attending GOP Convention in Tampa.
It might remind people just how EXACTLY the same Romney is to them.
It might remind people just how BAD they were for America.

Who knows how the choice of Ryan is going to play out? But, after watching Whipsaw Willard get so excited that he flubbed the big moment, I get the feeling he kind of believes all the cold blooded budget cutting that Ryan purports will save the nation and the debt. Tax cuts for the rich, lights up all the billionaires financing his campaign! Main;y, I think he gets turned on by all this "individualism versus collectivism" bull crap that finally justifies wanton greed he's practiced all his life and makes it seem noble and moral. Did you see the Mike Wallace tape doctored up? http://livenudepolitics.com/?p=2383
