WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ................................
Trump was visiting Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturday at the invitation of Gov. Phil Bryant for the states bicentennial and opening of the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
But Georgia Rep. John Lewis, a leader of the civil rights movement, says hell no longer speak at or attend the event. Lewis, who was among scores of Democratic lawmakers who did not attend Trumps inauguration in January to protest his record on race, said Trumps presence Saturday is an insult.
.....................................
Other accuse Trump of harboring racial animosity, citing his blaming of both sides for deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the summer. Trump has also relentlessly criticized NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality largely directed at African-American males.
..................................
Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippis only Democrat in Congress, announced his exit from the event in a joint statement with Lewis.
To come and somehow give the impression that things are all right, that were getting along, was absolutely the wrong message, Thompson told The Associated Press ........................................................
The NAACP, which is led by a Mississippian, has said Trump should cancel the appearance...............................

(347 posts)I watch CNN, MSNBC and the other communist news outlets. For the past few days, they've all had panels discussing Trump's visit to the Jackson, MS, civil rights museum and the protests against his visit.
There's one critical reason for boycotting that is missing: VOTING RIGHTS.
Many of the memorials in the museum are dedicated to people who were murdered -- lynched -- trying to secure voting rights for African-Americans -- indeed, for all minorities. Yet, Trump has empaneled his Voting Commission under Kris Kolbach and Hans von Spakovsky, the sole purpose of which is to roll back voting rights, especially for minorities. His attack on voting rights alone is enough reason to keep him away from the Civil Rights Museum.
I don't know how to get this point to the attention of CNN, MSNBC and other commentators -- I'm not on Twitter or Facebook -- but it's a point that needs to be hammered home.

(7,227 posts)...over a pic in the NY Times that showed Barack and Michelle Obama walking across the Edmond Pettus bridge on the 50th anniv. of the 1965 march - and left out of the photo, up until January 2017, the "Worst President EVAR!"? Who was actually there on that bridge...?
You know. These guys: http://dailycaller.com/2015/03/08/ny-times-crops-bush-out-of-selma-picture-highlights-ferguson/
And this guy, noted arborist, Sean Spicer: http://therightscoop.com/the-new-york-times-crops-out-george-w-bush-from-their-selma-front-page-picture/
Got it? The "libural" NY Times cropped out George and Laura Bush, and that set the Reich-wing's hair on fire.
Shocking, I know, but they hadn't. NY Times: There was no crop. This was the photo as we received it.
So what happened? NY Times photographer Doug Mills said HE cropped it before he sent it to the Times. Sunlight was to blame:
...Bush was in the bright sunlight. I did not even send this frame because its very wide and super busy and Bush is super-overexposed because he was in the sun, and Obama and the others are in the shade."
And here we are, two years and 9-months later.... I wonder what the Reich-wing Noise and Rage Machine is going to say about John Lewis skipping out?

(3,538 posts)He could have used his time at the podium to rip tRump a new one. Explain how taking a knee at football games is not being done to disrespect the flag but rather to protest police shootings of unarmed black men. To rake him over the coals for voter suppression laws and gerrymandering minorities into irrelevance. I keep hoping someone at a press briefing will stand up and say to Sarah Huckabee Sanders stop lying you f***ing liar! I would have loved to see Rep. Lewis do the same to tRump (a great deal more eloquently then I ever could, obviously).
We are way past the time for being polite with these assholes. Its time to start calling them out at every opportunity. I think John Lewis may have missed a chance to do just that.

We have so few routes to having our voices be heard, we need to be savvy and take advantage of these occasions, esp when national media are involved.
