Venezuela's president, Nicolas Maduro, says the country's main opposition parties are banned from taking part in next year's presidential election.
He said only parties which took part in Sunday's mayoral polls would be able to contest the presidency.
Leaders from the Justice First, Popular Will and Democratic Action parties boycotted the vote and said the electoral system is biased.

(6,810 posts)Not so long ago, a vocal group of DUers were cheering praises of the ruling party in Venezuela. Anyone notice how they've been pretty much dead silent once it became punch-in-face clear to anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together these were not good people in power? Never mind most people have been saying all along these were not good people in power, but hey better late and quiet forever.

(6,810 posts)In their minds, if they clapped hard enough then Venezuela would become the workers paradise they wished it would be. I've nothing against socialists or communists on an academic level, but in the real world Humans are still dicks and given a little power they tend to abuse it...

(35,320 posts)And made a note to watch Venezuela. I didn't think it would end well.
What could go wrong when a former military man who served time for an attempted coup promised a large number of people all would be well if they just took back "what was theirs" from the former government and played to class envy?
And then immediately relied on a nice trade, Cuban medical and political technology for subsidized oil? Because, after all, Cuba is a bastion of human rights and democracy.
And cozied up to China, Russia, Iran, and other bastions of democracy.
Maduro is Stalin to Chavez' Lenin. But Lenin reopened the Siberian prison camps that he made a big deal of closing and was responsible for more than a few politically-motivated deaths as the country fell apart. Fortunately, both are pale imitations of the originals.
