The defect that causes the neurodegenerative disease Huntington's has been corrected in patients for the first time, the BBC has learned.

An experimental drug, injected into spinal fluid, safely lowered levels of toxic proteins in the brain.

The research team, at University College London, say there is now hope the deadly disease can be stopped.

Experts say it could be the biggest breakthrough in neurodegenerative diseases for 50 years.

Some people will have the treatment to potentially slow this down to a crawl... and others will have "Maybe you shouldn't have been born".

A better question is should we be doing heart transplants on 71 year olds like Dick Cheney. I mean, why? So he can enjoy a longer retirement?

8. I didn't check the UK group before posting in LBN.

I just checked now and am not seeing your post. Am I missing it, or ?

Apart from that, do you think it's bad form to post something in LBN that was already posted in one of the specialty groups? I can't imagine there's a huge overlap in readers between LBN and any specific goup. I'm not even sure how you'd be able to check each one of the dozens of groups before making a post.

Time-wise, my post was definitely late-breaking; I think it was within 1 hour of the article's release.
