Paul Ryan says American women need to have more babies

Source: Think Progress

During a news conference on Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan urged American women to have more babies, saying their lack of procreation was stunting economic growth.

“People — this is going to be the new economic challenge for America. People,” Ryan said, in response to a question about entitlement reform.

Alluding to the fact that he’s a father of three, Ryan added, “I did my part, but we need to have higher birth rates in this country. Meaning, baby boomers are retiring, and we have fewer people following them in the work force.”

“We have something like a 90 percent increase in the retirement population in America, but only a 19 percent increase in the working population in American,” the Speaker continued. “So what do we have to do? Be smarter, more efficient, more technology — still going to need more people. And when we have tens of millions of people right here in this country falling short of their potential — not working, not looking for a job, or not in school getting a skill to get a job — that’s a problem.”

And second your no Benjamin Spock , how dare you say that woman need to breed more and have more babies, does you wife there Ryan take birth control, why don't you and her supply the country with the babies that you are looking for, and take her off birth control, because asshole some families can only afford one or two kids, because they can't afford a home, your taking away health care for starters , and your Ayn Rand logic of BS is just fucking amazing..........................

I have solution for you, so that you can be a stay at home father..............................

I grew up catholic in the 60's. I went to a very big catholic school. (135 in my 8th grade graduating class, so around 1100 in the school)

I knew of about 10 families with more than 3 kids. Almost everyone i knew were 1 to 3 kids.

My still catholic family (including cousins) have zero to 2 kids. The kids are all in the 20's or older.

Now, ultraconservative catholics might still be pushing this philosophy, but catholics themselves quit with the fruitful and multiply nonsense 50 years ago.

Can't speak on the mormon thing, but i think you attribute sensibilities shown by Ryan to too many people. Ryan is a tool and a fool, but i don't think it's rooted in anything other than his own personal, ridiculous world view. He didn't learn that from his church.

BTW: Except for my wedding (in a church for the family) and the funerals of my parents and my wife's parents, i haven't been to church since 1970. So, i'm not protecting the catholic church. Couldn't care less about them.

Many are in government. It's not gone and it's growing. BTW, I'm sitting in a Cathedral as I write this. Not to pray, I'm atheist. Won't say more about that.

Mormons... it's part of their basic philosophy. That's why they have polygamy... and yes, there are many polygamist Mormons, I live in the center of Mormonism. It's not part of their public personna and it was outlawed until a couple of years ago. But it's still around. One man, one wife and the younger sisters go with the wife as concubines. More pregnancies, more children.

And i get the pre-Vat II nutjob movement. But, that's not the preponderance of catholics who have had the reputation of being "cafeteria" types for a really long time. They believe the parts they want to believe, they adhere to the dictates they fell like sticking with.

While i agree with the invasion of these regressive types in Gov't, i still think it's a very small minority. And, unless one is a rich person and is making big money from donors, and a cushy political gig, people won't have more kids they simply can't afford because they are trying to be "good catholics". My sister still consider herself catholic. (Barely goes to church though, so, see what i mean?) But, after daughter two, that was it. The very idea of a third was anathema.

Same with my "brosins" spouse. (Brother is brother/cousin. Cousin who grew up in our house when his parents died when he was 10.) After the son, no interest in more babies. And they actually still go to church, though my brosin works odd hours and he doesn't go out of his way to attend if it's work inconvenient. (See what i mean again?)

Thanks for the reply.

As most people in Asia know, and many people around the world, Japan has a near-to-definite negative growth rate. The Japanese government surveyed women at some of Japan's most prestigious universities and reported that almost three-fourths of the women would take on the role of stay-at-home mom (here's the nub) provided their husband made enough money to support the family and had the job security that Japanese workers had prior to 1997.
Nothing came of it.
I mean, heaven forbid workers should make good salaries and be provided job protections

This is what Ryan either will never get, or does and doesn't care, no money = no medium size family

50. We Can Barely Employ the Americans We Have Now
Thu Dec 14, 2017, 10:49 PM
Dec 2017

It seems to me that the problem in America is not that people are not having enough babies. I do believe the Millennial generation is larger than the baby boom generation. If it is true that the Millennial generation is bigger than the baby boom generation than that means some where along the way people had more babies. The problem seems to be that people are not being trained with skill that will allow them to enter the work force. There are supposedly hundreds of thousands of jobs to millions of jobs that are not being filled because there is no one with the skills to complete the task. Paul Ryan should focus on figuring out how to train people in a way that would allow them to take the unfilled jobs. It has been said that many of the jobs that employers are struggling to fill are actually high paying jobs.

Second, you are right. Considering Paul Ryan is not a father of ten or more children he has no right to tell other Americans to have more children. He and his wife made a decision to only have three children. Everyone else should have that same choice.

Fri Dec 15, 2017, 06:27 AM
Dec 2017

One of the Nazis’ first tasks was to encourage families to produce as many children as possible. With a greater population, Nazi Germany could flourish as a strong and pure nation. In the time before Hitler took power, the Weimar era, the birth rate was steadily dropping “from 36 births per thousand inhabitants in 1901, to 14.7 births per thousand inhabitants in 1933” (Pine 10). In an effort to change this, the Nazis encouraged motherhood through propaganda in order to sway public opinion.

The Nazi party also enacted legislative measures to insure that the birth rate would rise. All forms of birth control were outlawed, and harsh penalties in the form of fines or death were in store for suppliers. In January 1941, Heinrich Himmler’s Police Ordinance even went as far as to shutting down contraceptive production in Germany (Pine 19). Abortion was outlawed as well, except in the cases of the socially unfit, where it would often be mandatory.

The difference here is the Nazis, offered rewards like the Mothers Cross, programs that helped to raise the children, as well as benefits to encourage families to reproduce!

.....Furthermore, there’s an obvious solution to the problem that Ryan completely ignores — allowing more immigrants into the country to fill the jobs being vacated by retiring baby boomers. But instead of using his position as House Speaker to pursue immigration reform, Ryan has instead indicated he’s on board with Trump’s hardline anti-immigration positions, including the president’s insistence on spending billions of dollars on a border wall.

At 48 I have, maybe, CLOSE to 4x after 24 years of working adult jobs. And that's WITH max contribution in funds that, overall, beat the index by 7% over that period of time.

Whoever peddled 401ks as the be-all, end-all for the "Three Prong System" (SS, Pension, individual savings . . . and pensions are an anachronism) must still be living in the 1990s, where you could blindfold-dart-toss a fund/stock and it would return 20%. The math just does NOT add up.

84. I confess. I never had anything close to 5X my salary saved

I was my mother's caregiver for several years and that impacted my career. Since being laid off in 2010, I just never got my career back on track, and sank into depression to the point of disability. But, such is life. I did a good job caring for my mom. I have some sense of satisfaction from that. But unless I win the lottery, I will not be financially secure.

The thing is, and the GOP doesn't seem to get this, is that when people can't save enough for retirement, they have to work longer. That means jobs for younger people don't open up as often, so that affects younger generations and we have downward mobility. Those making less than $50K NEED A RAISE. That really will stimulate the economy and savings.

81. After Roy Moore Loss, Baked Alaska Urges White People To Have Babies & Form A Coalition

Tim Gionet, who operates online under the moniker “Baked Alaska,” urged white people to have more children and “form some sort of coalition” following Roy Moore’s loss because white people are “the ones that are picking the right people.”

Gionet, who had taken a brief hiatus from his prior status as an alt-right flunky to stream himself playing video games and preaching the gospel, returned to political commentary this week to provide real-time commentary on the results of Alabama’s special election to fill the Senate seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. When news broke that Republican candidate Roy Moore had been defeated by Democrat Doug Jones, Gionet began ranting about black voters after one of his viewers posted statistics in a Discord chat server that detailed black voters’ overwhelming support of Jones.

“I don’t mean to be a dick here, but what is going on with the non-white voters? I mean, what is—if you care about MAGA, if you care about Trump, if you care about ‘Make America Great Again,’ if you care about the good MAGA candidates, it’s mostly white people who are voting for these people and the non-whites are, and I’m not saying all, but I’m saying a large [percentage], almost 90 percent, are not voting for the MAGA candidates,” Gionet said. “What is going on?”

Gionet agreed with a comment that a viewer named “Joey” posted in the chat server, that the election results in Alabama were “like a black-lash.”
